The beginning of the Capitals third season under the helm of Gm Jay Williams is upon us. Is this the season where the team finally bears fruit and makes the playoffs? The past two seasons saw the Caps narrowly missing the big dance, frustrating fans and ownership.
This past off season was the first in where the Capitals did not go out and spend big on any free agents. Has GM Williams finally learnt the lesson that overspending on free agents in the hopes to make the playoffs isn't always the best answer?
The last couple years have seen the Caps take the long steady road of development and the results have been more than hoped for. Home grown talents Seth Jarvis, Morgan Geekie and Cole Sillinger look to make big statements in the pros this year. This being the second year for Jarvis and Geekie, while Sillinger is the odds on favourite for the Calder in his first. Rasmus Sandin and Alexander Alexeyev (both developed within) look to be pro clubs top pairing this year.
The Capitals will be icing their best defensive line up under GM Jay Williams with another in house development in Pyotr Kochetkov expected to get the starting job. An aging Freddie Andersen will provide back up duties.
While expectations are up this year, the upcoming offseason is on everyone's mind. With stars Nico Hischier, Andrei Svechnikov, Cole Sillinger and Seth Jarvis will all need new contracts.
