The Buffalo Sabres have been pretty active this offseason and it looks like GM Edwards has decided to give this group one more kick at the can.
The Draft - Sabres management had us fooled when they traded #1 defenseman Jon Carlson to the Montreal Canadiens for the 23rd overall selection in the entry draft along with young defenseman Jordan Harris, that selection turned out to be controversial Trevor Connelly. Surely this meant Edwards has decided to get younger and start selling? To finish the draft the Sabres selected 6 defenseman in succession in the hopes that a couple of them hit and back fill what has become a deficit in the Defense pipe line. Buffalo capped off the final 2 picks of the draft with a Goalie and a Centre. Before the 3rd round Buffalo further confused us by trading youngster Jordan Harris and a couple of 3rd round picks to Florida for 26yr old Dante Fabbro leading us to believe Edwards is making another run.
Free Agency - At the end of free agency it was confirmed Sabres management are taking another stab at glory with this group. The first UFA attracted to the Queen City was elite journeyman Drew Doughty coming in to instantly become the #1 def and power play QB, Sabres signed the 34 year old to $6.75 million for 4 years. Management then threw a line out for a middle 6 forward preferably a centre with a decent face off rating. After getting out bid a few times the Sabres approached Nicklas Backstrom's camp and even though he may be a little long in the tooth GM Edwards had to make an offer now that Doughty signed, and Backstrom accepted an offer for $4 million a year for 4yrs. Backstrom instantly becomes the 2C in the Sabres depth chart making the bottom 6 stronger at the same time. Sabres management accomplished all of this and still managed to spare $1.75 million cap space which wasn't really expected.
