There are so many ways to evaluate trades. Is the player you traded for performing better with your team than the previous one? Is the player you traded away now performing better with the new team than with yours? Does the player you traded for put up better numbers than the player he replaced? If so, are those numbers in the cathegories you wanted them to be? Or is the intended scorer not scoring, but doing wonders for you in other areas? Is it thanks to that trade other players now bloom instead? Are the new contracts better than the old ones? And how much of your future and/or money is gone?
The Excel sheets in the GM computer actually look at almost every of those aspects, but the presentation of such a document would be way too extensive and, to be honest, not interesting to anyone but the owner of the players/document. So looking at the big number of trades made by the Islanders we will skim the surface and comment on each trade only briefly and with current production in focus. So, if you have a few minutes over and are as nerdy as I – enjoy!
One of the biggest trades saw Johnny Gaudreau, Bryan Rust and Hampus Lindholm leave for Filip Forsberg, Anthony Beuvillier and Scott Mayfield. A comparison focusing on production shows that:
Gaudreau during 20 games in NYI had 0.9 PPG. During his first five games in the blue and orange jersey Filip Forsberg has put up 0,8 PPG, a slight decrease. With the more physical presence shown in more hits the production could be considered equal.
Rust left the Island having produced 0,65 PPG and was replaced with Beauvillier, who during five games is sitting at 0,6 PPG. Once again a slight decrease. However, unlike Rust Beau has not taken a single penalty so far. Considering he still takes more hits/game that is a big plus, so that in our eyes is an improvement on the whole.
Lindholm with his superb skating (one of three players in the sim with SK99) produced strong 0,65 PPG over the 20 games. His production has dropped significantly in Ottawa, but that’s not the issue here. Scott Mayfield was not expected to produce in the same manner but has still put up 0,5 PPG so far. Mayfield is taking more hits and less PIMs/game, so it looks like we should be happy even with the third piece of this trade.
Could Seth Jones be on the move already? Rumors place him in a trade talks for another star defender...
A second ”biggie” to look at is the trade that saw Devon Toews and Henri Jokiharju from the pro roster leave for Seth Jones in return. Toews put up 0,7 PPG and an average of one hit/game for the ten games with the Islanders. Seth Jones had a slow start with the Islanders but is now producing the same numbers, 0,67 PPG to be exact. He’s taking more hits, but also more penalties than Toews and since he was expected to be a clear improvement over Toews, this must be considered a disappointment so far. The rumors are that Jones has been mentioned in trade talks already, but that has not yet been confirmed.
Anders Lee - a big improvement over Toffoli according to the NY Islanders' trade evaluation.
A third trade involving top players was the deal with San Jose sending Tyler Toffoli for Anders Lee. This trade is expected to be handled separately in an evalutation made by the Sharks, but we’re providing our view of this trade already here.
Toffoli was a disappointment, expected to produce more than the 0,53 PPG during his 19 games. The point production has gone up slightly after his move even though he’s still not scoring, but let’s leave that to the Sharks to comment on. Anders Lee however has already scored three times in six games and is sitting at 0,67 PPG. Considering Lee is right now playing on the second line while Toffoli was/is on first that’s even more satisfying.
Matt Martin - 0 points in 13 games. But the Identity line has still had a big impact on the team!
So, out of a number of moves made by the Islanders this season, let’s finally look att the assembling of the Identity line with Cizikas, Martin and Clutterbuck. This is a good example of in how many ways trades can be looked at regarding the impact on the team. With the model used so far this doesn’t look good for the Islanders. Cizikas has dropped his productivity with a third coming in from Colorado, scoring 1 point in 12 games. Martin has 0 points in 13 games and Clutterbuck 3 in 13 games. But since the Identity line was brought together big things have happened with the team. Shots for and goals for has increased, shots against and goals against have decreased and the GF/GA has moved up 17 units from 93% to 110% helping the team to a 11-4-1 record over the last 16 games. So, without a doubt has the Identity line had an impact on the team performance and the current position in the standings.
There are of course more trades to be evaluated too, but some are too small and insignificant to share with you and some are too recent to say anything about yet, even though neither Spezza, Tanev nor Varlamov has performed anything but well so far. So. are there more trades to expect from the Islanders? Well, does Dolly Parton sleep on her back? Does the pope have a funny hat and do bears shit in the forest?
