The Chicago Blackhawks who sit in first place in the Central Division have made a blockbuster trade to solidify their goaltending. A move that has to be viewed as an "all-in" type of transaction.
The Blackhawks sent Thomas Greiss, Darcy Kuemper, prospect Seth Jarvis and a first-round pick in 2022 to the Florida Panthers for Marc-Andre Fleury, Jake Allen and a fourth-round pick in 2022.
It's an extremely rare trade that saw two teams trade both goalies on their pro rosters. But the obvious key here is M-A Fleury for Chicago and the futures for Florida. Fleury is regarded as a top-three goaltender in the league and will solidify the back end on a first-place team.
"We want to thank both Greiss and Kuemper for their time here in Chicago. But once we heard Fleury was available we knew we had to make the deal. Jarvis is a rookie and one we fully believe in, but the goal is to win championships. We got closer to that goal today with this trade. Fleury is one of the best and we're happy he's here in Chicago." stated GM Hetherington shortly after the deal.
The price was high in young and exciting rookie Seth Jarvis and a first but neither of those pieces would be a part of a playoff run this or next year. Another big key to this deal is the fact the Blackhawks only added $1,700,000 in cap. As they rectified a bit of a dispersal draft mix-up. GM Hetherington got out of the long-term contract of Kuemper in the deal as well which was important to him. This way the team still has cap room to improve this roster elsewhere.
The deal was done fairly quickly, two short conversations and boom one of the biggest moves of the year. The timing of the deal was a bit odd. The Hawks had won their last four straight with Kuemper taking the reigns in net. But obviously, it was a move GM Hetherington felt they needed to do. Since the trade, the Hawks are 2-0 with Fleury letting in 2 and 3 goals respectively.
