Washington, DC
Saturday January, 22nd.
With one quarter of the season down the Capitals are at a respectable 10-7-4 good for 6th in the East. G M Larson had been rather quite on the trade front until Thursday night sending Doughty to the Dallas Stars. "Losing Doughty was a hard move to make" commented the GM he then went a little deeper into the decision "we were at the cap ceiling and need to address some more forward depth in our Top six. This move should allow us to bring in another forward or two to help round out the team. Anytime a player of Doughty's caliber gets traded the fans get a little anxious. I will tell them that Kulikov brings a great defensive game to the team as well as experience and leadership"
I agree with the GM that Kulikov is a good veteran player but the team does lose some great to exceptional potential from Doughty. He still has some great years ahead of him. As for the Caps the move frees up the cap needed to pursue something down the road. Larson has proven from years past that draft picks and prospects are available and he will move them to make it happen. Time will tell on this one
The good news: The top line of Hischier, Dabrincat and Boeser have been a joy to watch. Their line has energy handwork and great puck movement which as translated to a combined 79 point through 21 games played. Another bright spot has been Jesse Pulujarvi. Playing alongside Wennberg has helped his game mature faster than expected. Jesse has 23 points through 21 games. All in all the team has played good, not great, not bad. If the team wants to move up in the standings and get in the top three they will have to play much better. Specifically defensively. The Eastern Conference is tough.
This reporter is looking ahead to what the Capitals will do the final three quarters of the season. Will Larson be able to upgrade the second line? Will we go into the offseason with all of our picks? Will he move any of the young defensive core consisting of Boucher, Sandin, Hughes? I think the answer to these questions depend on how high they climb or how far the fall. I think this next month is huge for the club. lets hope the top line has enough fire power to keep up in the East and the defense can find their footing. I think no matter what the Goaltending will need to be very good. Fingers crossed!
