In part 2 of our trade diaries series we will have a look at a trade made with divisional rivals the Vancouver Canucks. Details of this trade are below.
What San Jose does in this trade is find a replacement for Coleman who was dealt in the Klefbom trade. Kreider will slot in next to Crosby on the RW and should provide not only a scoring punch but a physical presence. On the downside the Sharks are once again selling more future pieces, this time moving out farm forward Ozzy Wiesblatt, skilled prospect Daniil Guschin, and a 1st round pick to boot. GM’s around the league were a little shocked that the Canucks traded a top 6 winger for prospects and picks so we asked their GM Aaron Sanderson why he made this move.
"Trading a player like Chris Kreider wasn't something we took lightly. The fact of the matter is that although he has top 6 potential, that just isn't what he brought to the Canucks. We are happy with how our team has been playing, but Chris just wasn't fitting in with Coach Sutter's system. We feel Zach(Aston-Reese) will be able to have the same impact that Kreider was having, while we also add depth to our farm club, prospect pool, and pick pool." – Aaron Sanderson
And he’s not wrong, Kreider had 10 points in 18 games for Vancouver which is far from what many would expect from a top 6 power forward. Can he rebound with San Jose and become a high end scoring threat? GM Rensby-Wills had this to say.
“We believe Kreider will fit in very well with our group. Our mix of veterans and youth, filled with high end offence is exactly what he needs. Coach Q is planning on putting him with Sid the kid which we hope will spark some offence from him. At his best Kreider can be a threat all over the ice and a pain in the ass to play against.”
We have one more trade to cover in our next article and once again, it’s a doozy! Cheers!
