The Trade is 1 for 1.
The San Jose Sharks made some noise in the PFHL this past weekend. Trading away the greatest goal scorer of all time (Alexander Ovechkin) for one of the greatest overall players of all time. That’s right, Sidney Crosby is now a San Jose Shark. We Interviewed GM Matthew Rensby-Wills to try and figure out why this trade was made.
Wow, what a weekend. I’m not going to beat around the bush, Ovi is gone and Crosby is in! Why make this trade? The Sharks are currently only 4 points out of a wildcard playoff spot with 2 games in hand. Some are saying this is a panic trade.
This is far from a panic trade, this is a trade where we analyzed our team and found one of our biggest weakness’s is centre depth. We had been looking for a 2C for weeks now as we believe Roope Hintz is best suited on the wing.
2C? Are you calling Sidney Crosby, one of the greatest players of all time a 2C?
Listen, we know Crosby isn’t a 2C. He just slots in our lineup behind Connor McDavid. Adding Crosby gives us two top lines rather than a 1st line and 2nd line.
What are you expecting from Crosby? And a question fans want to know, will he be playing with McDavid at all?
We’re expecting Crosby to help us everywhere. He’s going to start off with Anders Lee and Blake Coleman, both players we’re expecting more from what they’ve showed so far. We really hope Crosby can get Lee and Coleman going. We also expect Crosby to play a role on the PK, in the dressing room(he’s received an ‘A’), and to answer your second question, on the PP with McDavid.
San Jose’s PP and PK are among the best in the league, why mess with that?
Our special teams are great so far this season, but we believe Crosby will not only improve both of those but he will also help us 5 on 5. He’s an all situations player, something Ovi is not.
Lets shift away from Crosby, goaltending has been an issue so far this season. What can you say about that?
Ned hasn’t had the greatest start to the year, we believe he can be much more consistent than he has been. But our team has struggled as a whole more than it just being a goaltending problem.
We know you aren’t afraid of shaking things up with a big trade, obviously. If you were to make another trade, what part of your team would you address and why?
Let me be clear, we love our team and lineup. Top to bottom we have solid depth and talent. But, on defence we could use some help. Guys are being asked to do more than they normally would. Ekholm has been amazing but the rest of the guys are playing higher in the lineup than they should be. Keep an eye out for another big trade.
Did you just wink at me?
Below are the San Jose Sharks projected top 6 lines.
Roope Hintz - Connor McDavid - Timo Meier
Anders Lee - Sidney Crosby - Blake Coleman
It’s about as close as you can get to 2 1st lines!
