Release the Kraken
With the dispersal draft just mere days away and through all the preparation put into this process General Manager Josh Rose had a certain strategy in mind with the knowledge that we would be picking 29th overall. As an organization we knew we wouldn’t be getting an elite player, but we wanted to make sure we got the best possible fits in terms of age and position to put us in a good spot moving forward. As things would play out, we got our #1 Center Sebastian Aho with the 29th overall selection, he’s a player we love he has all the intangibles you want in a top 6 forward, he’s creative, savvy, and responsible at both ends of the ice and at 24 years old it was really a no brainer. In round 2 selecting at 36th overall we selected what we felt was the other piece most vital to the long-term success of our franchise when we ultimately decided the best fit for our organization was young cornerstone defenseman Jakob Chychrun. Jakob contributes at both ends of the rink; he’s just coming into his own offensively in addition to his already steady presence defensively. With ultimately our two most important holes already filled it was time to fill out the rest of this roster. At forward we selected William Nylander, Josh Norris, Jakub Vrana, Clayton Keller, and Alex Iaffalo which rounded out our group of top 6 forwards. On defense we selected Ryan Pulock, Filip Hronek, Rasmus Andersson. And in net the steady John Gibson will be between the pipes. Once the top 6 and top 4 D positions were filled, we didn’t really like the way the draft was headed in terms of poor contracts for average talent, so we shifted our focus to drafting the best group of young talent and prospects that we could find, securing the rights to a load of young talent to develop down in our farm system. We want to make sure the pipeline is always producing good talent to add to our pro roster. Making sure we were covered at every single position General Manager Josh Rose went out and grabbed the likes of highly touted young Goaltender Jesper Wallstedt to mold into the future starting netminder. With key additions Philip Broberg, Kaiden Guhle, and Thomas Harley on defense, and Connor Zary, Barrett Hayton, Ridly Greig, Dylan Holloway up front. The future looks bright in Seattle.
At the conclusion of the dispersal draft we saw a hole on defense, and it wasn’t a hole we felt we could fix through unassigned free agency, the type of player we wanted to fill this role was not available through any route other than trade. Enter Mike Bollentin and the new Jersey devils, we identified John Marino as a target and through some negotiating, the Devils and Kraken we’re able to come to an agreement on a deal that would bring Marino to Seattle, with Riley Sheahan, Kole Lind, and a couple of mid round picks going back to New Jersey. With the defense shored up and ready to go, the plan was to find an entire serviceable third line in Unassigned free agency, and the plan came together flawlessly, adding Jeff Skinner(4yrs @ 2.4m), Victor Rask(4 years @ 2.95m), and Andreas Johnsson(4 yrs @ 2.5m). We still have a few holes to fill on the 4th line, but the roster is looking more and more like the one we’ll be seeing on opening night.
