The Vancouver Canucks are taking in Coach Sutter's concepts at a recent practice.
The Vancouver Canucks, and their farm affiliate; the Abbotsford Canucks, have done everything except sing the national anthems before the first preseason game coming next week.
In what can only be described as chaos with a direction, Vancouver managed to assemble a strong looking pro squad, and a strong looking farm squad through the dispersal draft and unassigned bidding process.
With a focus on younger players that bring skill at a good price, both pro and farm club look to be at the top end of their divisions going forward, while also having the ability to get better as we go on.
A notable miss on the teams roster would be a strong veteran presence on the back end. Andy Greene fills the veteran role well, but is in the twilight of his career and is a shadow of his former self on the ice. Other team weaknesses will be scoring depth, and a franchise centre, with only one true sniper on the team in Patrick Kane, and vets William Karlsson and Matt Duchene predicted to be the teams 1-2 at centre.
The teams lineup looks to be as follows:
Kreider-Karlsson-Kane
Debrusk-Duchene-Greenway
DiGuiseppe-Kuraly-Sutter
Dowling-Staal-Virtanen
Fox-Holl(Foxhole line?)
Girard-Hakanpaa
Greene-Cole
The Canucks looks VERY strong with their first line, although if the team does not find success early, it will likely move Kreider or Karlsson down in exchange for Greenway/Debrusk or Duchene.
As you can see, the teams offensive depth dives off of a cliff after the first 2 forward lines, so there may be some tuning needed.
On Defense the team looks very strong and plans to put their top 2 dispersal picks(Fox and Girard) on different lines in the hopes that this will provide more team offense than if they were on the same line, but that could change.
In net, expect Petersen to get the lion's share of the starts, with Korpisalo playing as a formidable backup. Management will not rule out a 1a/1b situation if it is needed.
FARM REPORT:
In Abbotsford, things are very bright, as the pro club opted to stack the Abbotsford Canucks with gifted youth rather than find wiley vets for the pro squad.
Expect Kailer Yamamoto and Alexandre Texier to lead the team offensively as they lineup with Michael Spacek or possibly Jeremy Bracco and look to be the teams go to offensive players.
On D things are very shiny indeed, with Nikolai Knyzhov, Olli Juolevi, and Jonas Siegenthaler all capable of playing for the pro team, but instead sent to Abbotsford with a challenge from Coach Sutter to "Give us no choice but to call you up".
In net Jared Coreau is slated to be the de-facto starter if he manages to survive the waivers process, and Griffen Outhouse will be given plenty of starts as well.
From this point of view, the Canucks look good right now, but they look like they will be GREAT next season.
