With the dust settled on the recently completed PFHL Draft, the Edmonton Oilers look to get off to a quick start once the season kicks off. The Oilers began the 24 Round dispersal draft with the 28th Overall selection, selecting forward Patrick Laine in the 1st round. The 2nd through 5th rounds brought Bo Horvat, Thatcher Demko, Torey Krug, and Alex Tuch to the fold. These key pieces will form the core of what the Oilers hope to be a competitive squad this upcoming season.
We had the opportunity to catch up with new Edmonton Oilers General Manager Travis Chorostkowski and Head Coach Craig Berube at their annual golf tournament at the Derrick Club in Edmonton. " Overall I think we are fairly happy with the team we have constructed." stated Chorostkowski, "We came in with a plan or idea of what we wanted to build, and at times we strayed from that plan due to the savvy of fellow General Managers drafting our players just before we wanted to take them several times."
The Edmonton Oilers continue to fill our their team, and farm team the Bakersfield Condors via Free Agency, but Head Coach Craig Berube likes what he has seen so far of the team. "I think we have some guys who can put the puck in the net, and be defensively sound as well. I'm excited to be a part of this organization for the next 5 years, I hope we can bring another cup to the fans of Edmonton. Have you tried the perogys at the buffet?" The Edmonton Oilers will play in a very competitive Pacific Division. "We will have some work to do, and battle every night. There are some great GMs in the Pacific with Sanderson in Vancouver, Tom Jervis in Vegas, Corey Chernuka in LA.....even the armpit of Alberta managed to attract a decent GM in Sean McAndrews."
Time will tell how well the constructing of the Oilers will go. Will they be competitive out of the gate? Do they have enough farm, and prospect depth to be competitive down the road? Does new General Manager Travis Chorostkowski have any clue what he is doing? We will find out shortly......
