Washington Capitals first quarter report
The Caps have played 19 games so far this season and currently hold the 3rd seed in the Metro with 21pts (10-8-1).
This marks the fourth season of GM Jay Williams at the helm of the Caps. The last two seasons saw the Capitals narrowly missing the playoffs which has been frustrating. GM Williams hopes this year will be different.
Most of the offense so far this season has come from four players. Hischier (23), Marner (23), Debrusk (23) and Svechnikov (21) all have over a point a game so far. Center Nico Hischier leads the team in goals with 13. Rookie Cole Sillinger has 18 points (7G/11A) in 19 games while splitting time centering the second and third lines. That's good for third place among rookie leaders.
The defense has had some rough times so far this year for the Capitals. Rasmus Sandin has been solid offensively posting 17 points from the back end but sits with a +/- of 0. A bright spot on defense has been the play of Tony DeAngelo who started the season as a healthy scratch as the seventh defenseman. Alexeyev was injured 3 games into the season and TDA had stepped in brilliantly posting 10 points in 16 games with a +6 rating.
Rookie tendy Kochetkov has been giving the bulk of the starts and had put up a decent showing so far with 9-5-1 record.
The biggest thing the Capitals need to work on is their penalty kill which sits near the bottom of the league at 75.6%.
As of now, this team gets a score of a B-. An improvement over last season's start, however; the Capitals have yet to string a couple wins together and their hold on a playoff spot is tenuous at best. The penalty kill needs work and the defensive play needs to be better.
