With the Flames toiling in mediocrity ever since 1989 (except perhaps 2004 when the puck was in!), the team has moved in a bold new direction by hiring Sean McAndrews. The new GM is well known in Sim circles for bringing the Florida Panthers back from the brink of bankruptcy and demotion to the AHL in the SCHL (a league McAndrews is now the commissioner of). He is also the GM of the Rangers in a league where he is constantly on the brink of quitting and of the Flames in another league that is actually pretty cool.
When asked about joining the PFHL McAndrews had this to say, "No brainer."
When asked to elaborate he had this to say, "I really look forward to working with Aaron and team. He and the rest of the group are good people and it will be really fun getting to know the other GMs as I build a dynasty in Calgary and dominate them for years to come."
McAndrews is well known for building a team around a youthful core with a look to the future, "I will leave the old guys to Canucks and the Bruins. You can always add veteran players but the guys you keep on your team for 10 years are going to make you a dynasty. We are going to focus on quality in the upcoming dispersal draft but not at the expense of the future. We are going to build a winner now and for centuries to come."
Some other interesting facts about McAndrews:
- He often makes deals in his hot tub (usually with a PBR in hand - beer snobs no need to comment)
- He has 3 kids, 2 dogs, and 1 wife
- One of his best friends is the GM of the hated Maple Leafs (it really should be Leaves by the way - horrible fucking grammar)
- He's been a Flames fan since 1986 when he cried watching the Stanley Cup raised by the Habs.
- He's a Flames season ticket holder
- He lives in Calgary but grew up on the mean streets of Red Deer
- He would have made the NHL if not for bad knees, an a-hole coach and a severe lack of talent
The Flames pick 17th in the draft which is pretty much smack dab in the middle which suits Calgary fine as they will never have to wait too long to make a pick. They will entertain offers to move up in the draft but are unlikely to move down. Looking forward to draft day and the first time someone says "ooooh, WAAAAAYY to early".
