There's been some recent news coming out of Tampa Bay this week and it wasn't just related to the weather and Hurricane Debby. The Tampa Bay Lightning of the PFHL have hired Mike Cooley to be the team's next general manager. Cooley comes to the PFHL with experience since the early 2000's with fantasy hockey.
"After discovering and reading up on the history of the PFHL and its league management, it's an honor to join such a fun, dedicated group," stated Cooley.
When a local reporter asked Cooley, why the PFHL, Cooley replied, "Because I was looking for a fresh start. Things have become stagnant with other leagues I've been involved in and to have a league that is so much more than just simulating games and talking a few trades here and there is awesome. This league checks all of those boxes and more for me. To be able to hit up Discord and chat with the guys after a long day of answering 911 calls, that's more than a lot of other leagues can offer."
When asked about his future plans for the Lightning, more importantly, what he would change and if a rebuild would take place, Cooley replied, "That's a loaded question for sure. First of all...I would need to sit down and take a closer look at the roster. First glance shows a solid mix of veteran and young talent, but more depth is needed. In terms of a "rebuild", we'll wait and see how things go after the puck drops on the 2024-2025 season. If this team lands a solid goaltender in addition to Cam Talbot and the team finds its groove in front of our goaltending, the sky's the limit in 2024. Regardless, we'll be looking to add depth in Syracuse as well as to our prospect pool and draft picks."
Is Cooley the "man with a plan" or "man with high hopes and dreams" in Tampa? After missing the playoffs the past couple of seasons, can Cooley help get the team back into playoff contention? Only time will tell if these questions are answered in Tampa Bay.
