Ducks Digest Summer 2024
After making their first appearance in the PFHL playoffs, the Anaheim Ducks management group has a lot to think about, but not necessarily a lot to do.
The fans and the entire organization were thrilled with how the season ended. On the last day of the regular season, while on the road, the Ducks clinched their playoff berth by defeating the President’s Trophy winning Vegas Golden Knights. The matchup, those same Golden Knights. The Ducks would take the eventual Western Conference champions to game 7, but ultimately were eliminated from the playoffs.
Major trade acquisition William Karlsson seemed to fit in seamlessly with the group and struggling forwards Brady Tkachuk and Daniel Sprong exploded offensively down the stretch flanking their new centermen. The Ducks always seemed to be missing that true first line, and it arrived in style with perfect timing.
Depth, defense, and goaltending have been solid strengths of the Anaheim Ducks since day one of the PFHL. In the last half of the 2023/24 season, the scoring finally caught up. Only Sammy Blais will not be returning from last year’s playoff roster, and Connor Dewar looks primed to take his place in the lineup and be an upgrade. The team on the ice looks poised to make a deep run in the playoffs, so why is GM Felts hesitating to make moves this offseason?
13 of the 20 players expected to dress in the opening night lineup are on expiring contracts, only 3 of which are RFAS. Thus, the Anaheim Ducks will be laying low this offseason. GM Felts will be far too busy negotiating contract extensions, and planning for all possible scenarios. He may be forced into a rebuild, or his core players could take discounts to stick together and try to win a cup. Only time will tell, and there is no point messing up a good thing with this group. Even if it is only for one more year.
