It was nothing short of a massive disappointment again for the Buffalo Sabres. Making the playoffs for the 3rd consecutive season to only fall short in the first round to a division rival. We're not sure the word 'Rival' can be used. Sabres jumped out to a 2 game lead in this years version of playoff disaster, looking to finally have the team to make some noise in the post season. Then the next four games the Sabres were out played by the hated Boston Bruins in every single category, Shots, goaltending, Power play, Short man, Hits, Face offs, oh and can't forget Goals scored. I could list the players that were horrendous here but i'm not sure I have the physical endurance to write all that out! Driedger was exceptionally horrible and considering the price paid to get him in Blue n Gold I can't find a strong enough word to describe how much of a let down he was. Aside from two fourth liners the entire team had a negative on ice goal differential. All in all the final grade for this years playoff performance is A for absolute disgrace!
What will GM Edwards do? Can he hang onto some core guys and make another run chalking the previous shortcomings up to bad luck? Unfortunate timing?? The other guys got hot? Or does he need to smash the reset button and start fresh? Off season should give us an indication of his direction.
After getting all that off my chest I will need this article on a happy note. The Sabres farm affiliate Rochester Americans made the playoffs securing the 7th seed in the AHL Eastern Conference. Facing the Checkers from Charlotte the Americans promptly lost 3 straight games then went on a 16-6 run mowing through the Belleville Senators and Hershey Bears before setting up a Calder Cup final against the Colorado Eagles of the Western conference. The Eagles have lost a total of one games at this point and were undoubtedly the favourite going into the final. And sure enough game one went to the Eagles, but the resilient Amerks took the next three games and placing the Eagles on the brink of elimination. The Eagles facing adversity for the first time in these playoffs many were sure they were done! The Eagles were not done, they put together two great victories to force a game seven against the Amerks, but it was the Amerks who tightened up to win that last game for the Season and capture the AHL Calder Cup Championship!! Excellent goaltending from both tenders and an elite level offense from the young core of the Amerks will get the majority of credit for this massive accomplishment. The Rochester Americans gave Sabres fans something the big squad can't and we loved every minute of the ride! Go Amerks!!!
