To WPG: Mattias Ekholm, 2025 SJS 5th, $500,000
To SJS: Sami Niku, Sam Montembeault, Zach Nehring (prospect)

Deal #2 with the Sharks here. Added a solid vet to play with Hughes here and offloaded two assets that we had no plans for. We hadn't planned on moving Niku, but his farm play elevated him enough to be used here for a needed D that could keep up with our newly-acquired franchise player.

I felt like Ekholm's best days are behind him and him being a potential UFA after the upcoming season, I felt maybe it was best for him to get a change of scenery. Sami Niku slots in as probably my #5 dman but the money saved in this deal helps me address more depth additions. Montembeault is farm depth which saves me from grabbing a goalie in free agency. Zach Nehring is an intriguing prospect (3rd round in NHL) and I get to continue to watch his development.
