Offseason Report for the Washington Capitals
It's been 3 seasons since Jay Williams took the reigns of the Washington Capitals. The team has now been fully transformed into a roster that GM Williams thinks should be able to compete for the foreseeable future. Development of the team's young players has started to bear fruit and hopes to blossom even more this year.
Up first is the draft outlook for the upcoming draft this year. Currently the pick cupboard is pretty bare with only one 2nd rounder and a 4th, 5th and 6th round pick. There was a rumor the Capitals were looking to acquire a late 1st or early 2nd to add to their picks but nothing has yet been confirmed.
Lets take a look at the Capitals group of Forwards for the upcoming season.
Marner, Hischier and Svechnikov return as the big guns in the forward corps this year. Both Hischier and Svechnikov are entering the last year of their contracts so they should have even more to prove, looking for that big payday. The good news for the Caps is that they are both under team control being Restricted Free Agents. Joining the top three are Jake Debrusk (acquired at the deadline last season) and home grown young guns Seth Jarvis and Cole Sillinger. Cole Sillinger should easily slide into the second line center position, moving Morgan Geekie to the 3rd line. Rounding out the bottom 6 with Geekie, should be Toropchenko, Pavlychev, Gaudreau, Bastian and Katchouk. That means that Sillinger, Toropchenko, Pavlychev, Gaudreau and Katchouk will all be moving up from the farm squad to play in the bigs. It's unclear if any moves will be made in Free Agency to alter this projection but anything can happen.
On defense, the Capitals look as strong as they ever have with 6 solid dmen in Sandin, Samuelsson, Fehevary, Jensen, Alexeyev and Marino. They also boast a 7th defender in Troy Stetcher who could also play for the big club. Sandin and Fehevary are up for new contracts as Restricted Free Agents this offseason but GM Williams is confident on getting new deals done for both players.
In nets, another home grown talent in Pyotr Kochetkov looks to make the jump from the minors to challenge aging veterans Francouz and Rask for the starting job.
Patience has been the name of the game in Washington as GM Williams has juggled issues with the finances for this club since the day he took the job. The bank account is on the upswing, the homegrown talent is breaking through and the fans are confident we will finally see the Capitals in the post season this upcoming season.
