Following another disappointing season, the hockey fans in and around Raleigh, North Carolina, and Hurricanes fans everywhere are screaming for change around their Carolina Hurricanes hockey team.
Earlier today the organization made a move that could be looked at as either insulting, or a warning to a certain party. The Hurricanes stripped GM Wes Mucyk of his Team President title. Many thought his firing would've been the right move, something that may not be far off. Mucyk still has 3 yrs remaining on his current contract.
With that, the GM may be looking for someone to take the fall for him, or to take the attention away from him for a bit anyway. That person may be Carolina bench boss Paul Maurice. Maurice has 2 years remaining on the 5 year deal he signed with the club. The head coach may end up falling on the organization's sword to take the blame for this past season.
Some news fans are waiting to hear about is the naming of a new Captain. The team has been without one since they traded their previous guy with the C on the front of his jersey, Pierre-luc Dubois. Hockey experts have felt, even before he was drafted, Dylan Cozens was widely thought that he would one day become a captain of an NHL team. Well now may be that time, and many around the hockey world expect news to break any day now.
Not all was bad though this past season for the Hurricanes, multiple rookie's had great seasons. Dylan Cozens had 77 points, LaFreniere finished up with 29 goals and Dman Braden Schnedier was having an outstanding offensive year before going down with an injury. He managed to put up 42 points in 62 games, 18 of those finding their way to the back of the net.
With those pieces in place for next season, expected improved play from forwards (NHL re-rates) Casey Mittlestadt and Brandon Hagel, could things for this team be different next season?
