To the surprised of many in Ottawa, 2 big trades involving the Captain of the team for the past 2 years in Seguin and Fehervary got people asking themselves, " Did GM Mike Bell fall on his head and forgot he was running a team who has an 8 games win streak"...well Mike Bell is ready to answer his reasoning.
It's pretty simple, Seguin was not playing up to his potential and it wasn't his fault. Seguin being a pure Centerman, was playing on the wing with Monahan and Beniers being our top 2 Centerman. Plus Seguin was demanding close to 9 million to be resigned with 2 million in SB. In came GM Matt from the San Jose club and Meier was a perfect and logic replacement. Being a pure winger, younger, better PO and cheaper with his demand of 7 million for 4 years with no SB was a logic choice. We remain competitive and we save money while getting younger.
Now for Fehervary. We didn't think we would move him but GM Jay from Washington offered Mitchell and we liked the idea of getting much better offensively while still being RFA.
Our main goal will always be of winning the Cup, but at the same time, we need to stay competitive for years to come. Do expect more deals to be done.
