Above: William Karlsson in happier times following a Vancouver win during the 2023 PFHL Finals
The Vancouver Canucks surprised everyone this week and actually moved a player that was rumoured to be available. That player was none other than the teams top centre, William Karlsson.
Karlsson was drafted by GM Aaron Sanderson in round 4 of the PFHL Dispersal Draft in 2021, at the 150th position. Many teams had passed on him at this point because they were turning their focus towards defense and goaltending, but the Canucks had already secured their D with the pickups of Adam Fox and Samuel Girard in the first 2 rounds, which left them free to build their offence by selecting Patrick Kane, and of course William Karlsson in the following 2 rounds.
During his tenure with the Canucks, Karlsson would play in every single game, always in the top 2 lines, and always on the power play, along with plenty of PK time. HE recorded 190 pts in 177 games, but will be known for his epic performance in the 2023 PFHL playoffs, scoring 33 points in 22 games, coming close to being awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy, and winning a Stanley Cup.
"Management came to me a week ago and told me about the direction they wanted to go with the team, and that I might end up moving. I understood it, but you never truly think it will happen. I know it's been tough times lately, but it's still surreal. I am happy to be moving to New Jersey, but I will always miss Vancouver" Karlsson was quoted while waiting at the airport.
In exchange for him, the Canucks received a major haul of potential future assets which signals a cardinal shift in the direction of the organization. Without a doubt, the most coveted piece was hulking, but struggling, D prospect David Reinbacher. Along with Reinbacher is wildcard farm forward Fabian Zetterlund, who is at a turning point in his development, which could yield a dependable pro player, or a perennial call-up. New Jersey also sent their 1st pick in this season's draft, and their second pick in next season's draft.
Vancouver also retained 50% of Karlsson's $5.9mil contract, scheduled to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season, and some lesser players were also moved to help the teams work the deal financially.
Of note, Trevor Moore, who was thrown in to make cap space from GM Bollentin in Jersey, has reportedly been given a shot on the pro squad in a "let's see what you can do" type of move fully endorsed by the Canucks coaching staff.
GM Sanderson was not available for comment, but his office did issue the following press release:
"William Karlsson has been a fan favourite, and one of the best Canucks on and off the ice ever since he came to the team. Circumstance required us to consider moving several players that have been very special and important to the Canucks organization, and we wish Willy all of the best as he moves on to lead a growing Devils team intent on making the playoffs. William Karlsson will be missed, but never forgotten."
The Canucks move on tonight, without "Willy", as they face the leagues coldest team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
