The Capitals have started their 3rd season under the direction of GM Jay Williams and see them currently holding down a wild card spot with 11 points in 10 games (5-4-1). Leading the team is newly signed Mitch Marner also with 11 points in 10 games (6G, 5A) who is playing on the first line with franchise center Nico Hischier and savvy winger Andrei Svechnikov.
All eyes were on the trio of forwards who made the jump from Hershey last year to the big club. All three currently make up the Capitals second line, with Morgan Geekie at center and Tage Thompson and Seth Jarvis on the wings. Scoring doesn't seem to be a problem for them, but the trio does share a team worst -8 rating. GM Williams had mentioned possibly splitting them up to find a more balanced chemistry with other forwards on the roster.
Ian Mitchell and Rasmus Sandin are leading the defense in points, both finding success on the team's power play units. Newcomers for the big club in Cody Ceci and Cal Foote have struggled and many expect the defensive pairings to be tinkered with to resolve these issues. Gm Williams does believe he can find a solution within the club without having to resort to the trade market.
Jack Campbell has been pretty solid for the Capitals in net posting a 5-3-1 record with a .887 Save % and a GAA of 3.43. There is no denying the team does need to shore up its defensive shortcomings if it hopes to gain a first-time playoff berth this year.
