Tomorrow the puck will be dropped as the PFHL will begin it's 2023-2024 season. The Carolina Hurricanes will take to the ice for their 1st game of the regular season on day 2 as they will host the Ottawa Senators. The Sens had a solid preseason after they went 9-3-2 while scoring the 4th most goals with 59.
Last season Carolina played 19 of their first 28 games on the road. Again this season the team will need to become road Warriors as following their season opener the team hits the road for a 6 game trip. It's a tough schedule that the Hurricanes face to start their season, not only because of their travels, but the difficulty of their opponents. Similar to last season Carolina plays 18 of their first 29 games on the road.
With several rookies on the roster, the organization made a questionable decision this offseason by taking away the "A" from Burakovsky and giving it to rookie Cozens. Dylan Cozens will center the 2nd line which will feature Vatrano on one of his flanks and most likely (as we saw in the preseason) a rotation of Burakovsky and Nyqvist. Captain Pierre Luc-Dubois will of course be down the middle for the top line with rookie Alexis LaFreniere on his left wing. The backend will feature 2 rookies in Braden Schneider and Andrew Peeke. Both players are expected to see time in the top 4.
With four rookies on the team, 3 of which the organization hopes are core long term pieces it will be interesting to see if the organization will let them work through things, or if keeping their eyes on the playoffs becomes priority.
This tandem in the crease that the Hurricanes have, at least on paper, should be the best the team has had. That is not a good thing though. It more goes to show just how weak the organization has been at the position.
Still a team built for the future, this will be yr 3 of the 3-5 year plan so fans and the organization will both have expectations for their team for the first time since current GM and Team President took over the chair. Be in the playoff hunt
