Let's face it, Two years into the PFHL and the Bruins have been a huge letdown, or at the very least, unimportant in the scheme of the leagues games.
The Bruins have been nothing more than a team focused on development since the inception of the league. While year one didn't see as much focus as they should have on the farm, that did in fact change last year. The Bruins were careful about spending, careful with the bank account and managed to keep a nice balance besides not being playoff relevant and gaining that income.
This offseason started with some trades. Adam Lowry was moved out for a first plus. The Bruins then moved out Matt Murray and some longer range youth, shoring up the goaltending by adding Linus Ullmark. A big piece of that deal was adding another younger defenceman in Filip Hronek. Chris Tierney was also added in that deal as center replacement for Lowry, but more on Tierney later.
Focused on goal scoring, the Bruins added Tomas Tatar for a very cheap price from Florida Man. Said Davidson "Keeping the puck out of our bet and defence wasn't our issue, we just couldn't score any fucking goals!"
There was a pack of deals over the next week or two leading up to free agency that brought in smaller pieces, cleared cap and saw the Bruins even adding draft picks, which is not their norm. This should have led teams to see perhaps something large was Bruing in Boston.
As free agency loomed, decisions to the coaching staff would also be needed. Mike Babcock was without a deal, and in the end Boston decided to move on from him. Manny Viveros also got chopped from the farm club and Boston went out and got two top coaches. Jay Woodcock was taken for the farm club and Dominique "Charles" Ducharme was hired for the Pro team.
"What the hell kind of name is that?" said Davidon. "I'm just calling him Charles. Isnt that what all French guys are named anyways?"
The most curious part is that "Charles" only got a two year term, while Jay Woodcock got 4 years on the farm. "Charles is on a tight leash, I want this ship turned around, so if Chucky can't do the job, we have a guy in waiting in the organization."
Who could possibly expect a new coach to lead this group that was so horrendous into a successful season?
"I getting Charles some real help"
And so he did!
More writing of what was impending on the wall, as Gm Davidson managed to move out Shea Weber. One of the leagues most talked about tough contracts.
Free agency hit and the Bruins were among the most active. jumping out with huge offer right away on John Tavares. In an exciting couple of weeks saw the Bruins dance around on a number of players. Tavares, Schenn, Pacioretty, Malkin, Getzlaf and a couple others. "I saw an opportunity this offseason. I had cash, I have younger developing players on the rise, I had cap space, and one of the few teams that could be in on more than one player." The Bruins goal coming in wad Tavares and another top player, minimum. Pacioretty as a winger or even Malkin as another center was the goal. Malkin's age worried the Bruins, but adrenaline took over, drama ensued league wide and at one point Davidson tried to land Tavares and Malkin. If not for a last minute truce. the Bruins had an opportunity to land both once Tavares was official but instead opted to land both the top Center and top winger of free agency. Brayden Schenn was also briefly a Bruin as well but an accounting error nixed that.
So now "Charles" Ducharme has some offense to go with the defence and goaltending. Tavares, Pacioretty and Getzlaf join a solid group of wingers in Hall, Smith and Mantha. Sean Kuraly was added to be our shutdown defensive center.
There is still something missing. Chris Tierney isn't a second line Center. "Charles" Ducharme came to me and said, THIS NOT GONNA WORK..TABERNAC, THUS GUY IS SHIT...MERDE!
Davidon found an opportunity from a cap team to add a second line center. Tierney was moved out, we thank him for his tenure in Boston. Anders Lee was the return at just 2 million hit on our cap over what we were paying.
Boston now has two true scoring lines, depth, defence and goaltending.
Will the results be there? Who knows, but it was a whirlwind of an offseason this year for Boston. Davidson has publicly said he will not be a factor next year in free agency, but would look more to 2025 for another attack, but who knows, it's a long season.
Let's see what "Charles" can do with this team!
