It's that time of year again, the 2023 PFHL Entry Draft is here! Deals will be made, hearts will be broken, dreams will come true, fist pumps will be had "what was he thinking" or "that's solid" will be heard throughout the arena.
Hoping you make the right choice and that guy turns into something or your F.O.M.O. doesn't get the best of you leading your ass to the "hotseat" the PFHL draft can be a fun place. An emotional rollercoaster. A glass case of emotions, in a hot arena where you may find yourself saying "milk was a bad choice".
GM Mucyk"Exciting! Kate looks so hot." said the man himself as we caught up to him to talk some hockey. Mucyk "there he is, the mighty duck himself, Emiliooo!"
Anyway later in the day the Gm and Team President confessed that for the 2nd time in his days as a GM (long time) he had a tie in his rankings and could not decide. That being between Zach Benson and Colby Barlow. Lucky for him the decision was made easy as Benson was selected the pick before his.
Carolina has 11 picks in the draft. 25 prospects in their system after the following players have graduated up to the pro team for the upcoming season. Lafreniere, Cozens, Peeke and recently resigned Braden Schneider.
Carolina has a deep prospect pool and young players throughout its organization. In net at this time is where they are weak. Last year the Hurricanes selected 3 goalies at the draft. They did that again this year hoping to turn that position into one of strength.
With the teams current strongest point being down the middle with Captain Pierre Luc-Dubois and Dylan Cozens already being locked in as their top 2 Cs. Knocking on the door are Logan Cooley, Jack Drury with Nicolas Modenhauer close behind.
The D has some high end prospects and young guys who just cracked the pro team. With Lafreniere expected to be the teams top LWer, Dylan Guenther a top 6 RWer and Patrick Puistola who can play either side, both of whom are expected to be on the pro team come 24-25, this organization is bursting with young up and comers.
Who will they add to their already stocked cupboards?
Carolina selected Colby Barlow with their first pick in the draft at the 10 spot. Colby is a Canadian kid who plays left wing. Colby is a born leader who leaves it all on the ice. With a pro calibre shot and a tremendous ability to find open ice he should have no problems lighting the lamp at the pro level. He blocks shots, has an active stick that allows him to often create turnovers. On the backcheck his hard work can lead to pick pockets. Barlow has the potential to be on both special team units. Think Mark Stone will a better ability to finish.
At the 2022 PFHL Draft the Hurricanes selected 3 goalies. In the 2nd round with the 41st pick it was 6'5 Fin Topias Leinonen. Then in the 4th round round at 122 (TOR prospect) it was Dennis Hildeby from Sweden who stands 6'6, and finally in the 5th round with the 144nd pick Canadien Ty Young was selected. Ty is on the short of the Carolina goalie prospects at 6'3. Now at this years draft with their first selection in the 2nd round Carolina took goalie Adam Gajan at 42. Adam is 6'3 from Slovokia. Dude has a powerful side to side action, usually doing the splits in an effort to get across the crease.
Mucyk"yeah, he took my guy that I wanted with our next pick."
There was a delay in the draft as GM of the Calgary Flames Mr.Sean McAndrews was missing. A search party was formed and Sean was later found sleeping under a desk in the head office. McAndrews had a George Costanza type setup done under there. He even took the beer helmet idea to a new level as he had rigged it up so that a container full of alcohol flowed down through a small tube and led down into his mouth. It was all really quite impressive, and yes the rather large container was drained dry. Mr.McAndrews had it all planned out except for the timing was off.
With their second pick in the 2nd round Carolina took RWer Jesse Kiiskanen. Kiiskanen is a workhouse. Kid loves to get in on the forecheck. He is just as effective at putting the puck in the net as he is setting up his linemates. As one of the youngest players in this draft he has plenty of runway to further improve his game, which already projects to be an offensive threat that will knock you on your ass.
Now we take a look at Carolina's last pick in the 2nd round. The Hurricanes have a prospect pool that is full of large Dmen. Two way Dmen Edvinsson 6'5, Arseni Koromyslov 6'3, "The BOOM" Alexander Nikishin, Joni Jurmo 6'3, Braden Schneider 6'3 and Scott Morrow being the shortest standing 6'2 Continuing with that 6'5 Jakub Dvorak (already signed his ELC contract with the Kings) was selected 59th overal. The big stay at home Dman from Czechia is able to get around the ice with ease and does a great job clearing the front of the net and engaging physically throwing big hits and getting involved in scrums. He has figured out how to play this way while being able to stay out of the box.
With that, we end the Carolina Hurricanes 2nd round picks and part 1 of this 2 part series.
