The Washington Capitals Front Office wasted no time this morning putting pen to paper and locking up two key players for the franchise long term. Going into the offseason, probably the biggest thing to get done was to sign newly acquired star Mitch Marner to an extension. The offer sheet period was fast and furious and GM Williams dodged a bullet by having no other teams make an offer for Marner. The Capitals and Marner were able to agree on a 4 year extension at an average of $9.5M per season. "This is great news for the club" GM Williams stated about the signing. " Locking Mitchie up for four years really gives us a solid top 6 for the foreseeable future." The other Restricted Free Agent of note for the Capitals was hard hitting dman Cal Foote. Cal Foote also made it through the offer sheet window without an offer and chose to sign with the Caps. His deal was for $5.5M a year and for four years. This makes Foote the second highest paid defenseman behind vet Nick Jensen. "Locking up Foote was important to us as he is an integral part of our plan moving forward." Williams stated. "We had thought about only offering a 2 year term for longer contract control of the player but we have a lot of contracts we will need to deal with in two years and didn't want to add another unknown variable to the mix" The draft is next and then Free Agency. The Caps only have a few late round picks and things are unclear what, if anything they will do during free agency.
