The Washington Capitals are eagerly awaiting the opening of the 23-24 PFHL season. The organization has promoted 7 players from the farm club to spots on the pro squad next year. GM Williams is looking for a much improved result in the standings and hopefully a spot in the playoffs.
Joining the Capitals in the forward ranks are Tage Thompson, Seth Jarvis, Morgan Geekie and Nathan Bastian. Geekie, Jarvis and Thompson all had great offensive numbers last year on the farm combining for 129 goals and 301 points for the Bears. Bastian put up some good defensive stats and 185 hits and will slot into the Capitals bottom 6.
The biggest improvement for the Capitals will be the defensive infusion it stands to receive from Ian Mitchell, Cal Foote and Rasmus Sandin. They will join Nick Jensen, Tucker Poolman and Ian Cole to round up defensive core for next season. Sandin and Foote made an excellent pairing last season in Hershey combining for 178 points from the blue line, still while locking things down defensively. Mitchell will most likely play with Jensen on the top pairing, while GM Williams would like to see Sandin and Foote continue to play with eachother as the second pairing.
Heading into the off season the Canes biggest weakness seemed to be their goaltending with aging journeyman Ben Bishop and slowing vet Frederick Andersen tending the pipes. IT didn't take GM Williams long after the trade freeze was lifted for him to work some trade magic. First, Andersen was sent to Calgary for cash and second, Williams sent prospect Mavrik Bourque, Ben Bishop and a 4th to St.Louis for Jack Campbell. Campbell will get the majority of starts next year with either Tyler Parks or a free agent pick up getting back up duties.
The Capitals don't have much to do in the draft this year, with only a couple late round picks in the bank. Their first was moved this year in a package for RFA forward Mitch Marner. That remains the biggest check mark left on GM Williams list this offseason, to get Marner a new contract. He is open to possible offer sheets, however; GM Williams already stated he would automatically match any offer so that means it is only a matter of how much instead of if and when.
The Capitals look forward to being a lot more competitive this year. Projected lines appear to be as follows:
A. Svechnikov - Hischier - Thompson
Marner - Geekie - Jarvis
E. Svechnikov - Colton - Bastian
Mikheyev - Hischier - Kuhlman
Jensen - Mitchell
Sandin - Foote
Poolman - Cole
Campbell - Parks
