The Flames have made their first significant move of the offseason acquiring young forward Martin Necas from the Chicago Blackhawks. The trade looks as follows:
To Calgary: Martin Necas
To Chicago: Mikhail Sergachev, Year23 Rd2 (WAS)
We asked GM Sean McAndrews about this deal, "We are ecstatic to complete this deal as we have been looking for a top 6 forward for the better part of a year and was our #1 goal going into the offseason. Martin is highly skilled and will complement our forward group really well. Mikhail was a fantastic player for our team but with the young group of defenders coming up we really needed to capitalize on our organizational strength. Moving Mikhail is no knock on his skillset, he was just highly in demand which speaks to his quality."
When asked about the financials of the deal, as the Flames kept 50% of Sergachev's deal, McAndrews continued, "Even with the retention we are saving money. Furthermore, Necas has a lot of team control although we do acknowledge his next contract will have a significant raise attached to it. If you look at the core of our team we have 6 of our top guys, including Necas who will be RFAs when their current contracts expire. There are also some high-end farm players we expect to graduate in the next few years. Also, with the program we are building here for this year, and for the future, we are confident of retaining some of our key veterans as well."
After completing this deal the fans likely want to know what is next for the offseason. Will there be more trades? What will free agency look like? "This certainly ticks off a big box for us and takes some pressure off of free agency for us. We really wanted to add a top end forward. The next goal is to look at a 1A or 1B goalie. This move increased our cap room so we can allocate a bit more in free agency to the position if we wish to. With that said, if the opportunity came through trade to add through trade and it made sense then we would explore those options too. We also need some depth additions lower down in the roster as well."
With this deal here is a look at the Flames projected lineup.
Line 1: Debrincat / Lindholm / Nylander
Line 2: Kane / Monahan / Necas
Line 3: Maltsev / / Hathaway
Line 4: Dzingel / / Clifford
