The New York Islanders season was an improvement from last year, but nevertheless a big disppointment to the manegement. The Isles eliminated the NY Rangers in the first round, but was then swept by the Detroit red wings. Losing four straight games is one thing, but the way the team performed and how the games were lost another. Weak goaltending, weak defense and only one line producing offensively against the somewhat overachieving Red Wings was far away from enough. And with that disappointment in the rear mirror and big holes in the roster the question is what the fans should expect from their team next season.
Right after the embarrassing playoff exit GM Westman annoinced the resigning of announced the resigning of three pro team players and one member of the Bridgeport squad. Scott Mayfield, Nate Schmidt and Filip Forsberg were all signed on long term while John Tavares, Casey Cizikas and Matt Martin all were thanked for their services as they move on to free agency.
Exactly what to expect from the Islanders in free agency is hard to figure out as needs are big, but the financial strength as well as the cap space margin is not the best. A #1 center should be the top priority, but that goal is shared with many teams, so GM Westman better have a plan B. The ambition to also acquire a more physical D-man has been mentioned by our sources, but not confirmed by the management. The same sources also claim Sorokin could be on the market but no trade block has yet been officially announced. Most likely that will not come until after free agency is closed.
