Heading into the 2nd season of the PFHL the Carolina Hurricanes hoped to improve upon their 31st place finish in season 1. The team publicaly let everyone know that they were focused on finishing around the 20th spot this season. The team ended up in the 23rd spot when their season finished, but did hover between the 16th and 19 spots for a good portion of the season. A losing streak to end their season bumped them down.
Next season the Hurricanes will have several rookies inserted into their lineup. Should the fans except and accept a step back? How will this team, like could they possibly improve upon this past season?
It was known shortly after the Hurricanes hired current Team President and GM Wes Mucyk that the organization would be focused on youth and building towards the future. This was clearly evident when the PFHL held its inaugural draft as Carolina selected 4 prospects out of their first 8 picks.
1st selection was of their Captain Pierre Luc-Dubois. He's been their best player leading the team in points in each of the first 2 seasons. PLD has 2 more years remaining on his current deal. Expect the club to do anything necessary to sign him to an extension.
With the teams 2nd pick they went with prospect Alexis Lafreniere. The youngster is expected to make his debut with the big club next season. The organization is hoping for him to have a strong camp and play his way onto the top line flanking the left side of Dubois.
Sam Reinhart, who was selected next and Andre Burakovsky(5th) were picked with the expectation that following season one, the organization would trade at least 1 of them.
At the 4 spot it was prospect Dylan Strome who got the call. The team and fans are excited to see this guy come into training camp next season as the hockey world expects the workhorse from Whitehorse to have a great offseason (NHL re-rate or SIM re-rate) following a tremendous season down on the farm where he continues to improve game in and game out.
In the 6 hole it was Carolina continuing with the pro, prospect, pro, prospect pattern of picks with Dman Simon Edvinsson. The organization hopes this kid turns into their franchise #1 on the backend for some time.
Kris Letang was grabbed with the Hurricanes next pick and shipped out during the first season bringing us to Dylan Gauthier who was taken 8th overall. A pure sniper on the right wing, this youngster should develop into a top 6 forward.
Several guys, rookies or still early into their careers were selected like Jacob Larsson who just finished his 1st pro season with the big club, and Andrew Peeke who just signed an extension and is expected to make the pro roster out of training camp. Other prospects included Braden Schneider and Samuel Poulin.
We know the Hurricanes prospect pipeline is bursting, and that there's a lot of high end talent in there. Up front there are guys the organization and hockey world are high on at all positions. On the backend, the pool is deep, and the majority of those kids are big bodies who can skate well. Then you look in net. Pro, farm, prospects, the Hurricanes at this time do not seem to have a #1 anywhere. Goalies are funny so you never know. Carolina will continue to add more names to their prospect list this summer in hopes that one of those guys can fill the spot, otherwise at some point the oganization may need to look outside it's organization for that #1 netminder.
