Over the last off-season, the Devils made some moves in hopes of closing the gaps in the system. Like last season’s pre-season, this year they looked like a D-League team playing a D-1 college team. Also, like last year, they came out on a tear winning their first 3 games and 5 of the first 7. Then the proverbial wheels got wobbly. Like a runaway trolley car in San Francisco, the Devils have been able to notch wins as bookends for losses. Not the recipe for success GM Bollentin had on the board.
While the more successful teams around the league have seen the nauseatingly less than stellar play and have been trying to pluck the high-end talent and high-potential talent away, hoping Bollentin would part ways to rebuild. Bollentin remains firm on who his core is. “We know we have something special with this core of goalies in Swayman, Dawes, & Schmid. Add into forwards Mercer and Zetterlund and the anchor on the Blueline, Zach.”
Insiders have said that teams have tried to acquire the likes of Fowler, Gurianov, Laughton, Marchessault, and Fowler, to name a few, but Bollentin has been resistant to letting those pieces go. Bollentin confirmed those requests saying, “Yea, I passed on some great offers on a few of those boys. I’ve been hoping the team would gel. Look, we have 23 games left and are 9 points out of a wildcard spot. It would take an East Palestinian train wreck of a couple of teams to make the playoffs.”
When pressed about any trade deadline moves, Bollentin laughed. “Last season we were in a good position and spent to go deep. Sadly, we hit a wall in Round 1. I really thought the moves we made over the summer were going to pay off. Looks like we are sellers this season. Funny how quickly things can change.” When ask if any player is safe from being moved, Bollentin stated, “Yea, that core of 6 is clearly our future. They’re not going anywhere. Pretty much anyone else is open for discussion. I’ll be looking to rebuild but no need to go all scorched earth with this core.”
As reported sought some specifics, Bollentin smiled and walked away. It will be interesting to see what, if any, moves are made between the publishing and the deadline. I was able to catch a person in the know for the Devils who agreed to offer this nugget of insight in anonymity, “We have shifted focus to next season. We are evaluating the personnel, looking of the UFA’s, the up coming draft, and looking to use our assets as effectively as possible.”
