Colorado Avalanche - Mid season report
49 games have been played by Colorado Avalanche this season.
Pro team stays 3rd last overall, which is not a surprise to fans and team itself.
Farm team is fighting for playoff spot, which seems realistic goal overall.
A lot of movement has happened on the trade front as well.
Core players such as Josh Anderson, Teddy Blueger and Brady Skjei are playing in other teams.
Top future Pro players Tage Thompson, Cole Sillinger and Simon Nemec have also left Denver and will bring joy for other teams in near future.
But Avalanche have received in return some very good players and prospects, Evan Bouchard, Kaapo Kakko, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Lukas Reichel to name a few.
Pro team’s offense has been the weak point, as Colorado stands last on goals for (2.65) & second last on PP% (17.86%).
Some of the trade has weakened our offensive capabilities for this season. On goals against Colorado is 14th (3.37).
Penalty killing has been a bright spot, which is 82.59% and standing 3rd at the moment.
Biggest positive thing has been Spencer Knight. His goaltending has been on excellent level. His stats : 28 GP, 14 W, 12 L, 0 OTL ; 2 SO ; 90.6% SV% & 3.17 GAA.
Knight stands 5th on saving percentage.
Antti Raanta’s stats are on ok level and is up-for-task as 2nd goalie. He has also been a great mentor for Knight and is overall very liked in the locker room.
Claude Julien : “Even though we stand 3rd last, I can see some very positive signs in our performance. Many players like Knight, Stutzle and Bouchard have taken big steps forward in their development. Overall, we are only circa 10 points a drift away from playoff spot. I’m certain that Colorado can put a serious push for playoff spot next season.
I know there has been a lot of speculation regarding my future in this beautiful organization as my contract runs out at the end of the season. Me and GM Kalmi will sit down in coming weeks, talk where we are heading and how my future will look like.”
Todd Reirden : “Farm team’s season has been up-and-down, especially after we lost Sillinger and Thompson, who were cornerstones of Farm team. After that we have been trying to slot in some new players like Rubtsov, Protas, Zucker and Deangelo, which has taken quite a lot of time. Still, we are trying to find the right chemistry, but finally some positive signs can be seen. Next season will bring big changes as Drysdale and Hajek are ready for Pro team. Dellandrea and Perfetti might still spend one more season in Farm, but that will be decided during off-season. Overall this organization is going forward as well as I’m certain improvements will continue and fans will be celebrating success in near future.”
Mark Waggoner (Senior Vice President, Finance) : “Our main goal has been from the day one to have our financial aspects in order. Of course, to get into playoffs is a very important goal and not only for sportive aspects, but for financial as well. We are not there yet, but we are on the right path towards it.
Now and in future we will run a tight ship, we won’t be attending the crazy days of FA auctions. We see those mostly as first steps to bankruptcy. Risks can be taken and of course we want to keep our best players here, but calculations will be done in detail. If calculations show positive, we do it. Negative, we won’t. “
