It's been just over two weeks now since an infamous trade between the Calgary Flames and Washington Capitals was vetoed by the commissioner's office. Nothing has really been officially reported regarding the details of what went down, however; that is about to change. An anonymous and trustworthy source has decided to come forward and provide a little insight into one of the biggest dramas of the PFHL's second season.
It was no secret that GM of the Capitals Jay Williams was shopping the services of Blake Coleman, however; it seems not everyone was aware that Washington's first round pick was also on the table. Williams was planning to move the 1st with Coleman to land a top tier winger to play on the first line with Hischier and Svechnikov. It seemed to be a sensible ask, especially since the Washington 1st looked to easily land in the top five, if not top 3 in the Draft Lottery.
Jay was more than surprised when nobody really came knocking on the door looking for a deal. The only interest came from Calgary GM Sean McAndrews. Gm Williams had shown interest in young winger Mikhail Maltsev for quite some time and talks were on and off already for close to a month with nothing materializing. Maltsev didn't seem like much on Calgary's third line not putting up very many points but GM Williams had this notion that on Washington's top line, he could turn Maltsev into a star in the league. It was also no secret that Washington was heading for a rebuild and they had already made a great many moves to get to the salary floor. Moving Coleman's five million dollar deal from the books would go a long way in saving the organization money for the rebuild. Jay had mentioned to the source that he didn't really feel comfortable moving the pick with Coleman and the deal was put on the back burner.
While GM Williams waited for more offers to roll in for the pick, he grew a bit more nervous about making a deal sooner rather than later. That's about the time McAndrews had called Jay up and offered to take him out to a fancy steak dinner at Montana's. Jay had agreed and met Sean at the local Montana's a couple nights later. Shortly after being seated for dinner, the conversation quicky moved to trade discussions and it remained so throughout.
It was midway through the dinner where Jay had reportedly gotten up from the table to use the men's room when he believed Sean had slipped something into his drink. Our source said that GM Williams doesn't remember anything after getting up to use the bathroom before waking up the following morning in his own bed. GM Williams then called our source after breakfast that morning complaining of a headache and having a strange dream that he had traded Coleman and the 1st for Maltsev and a mid prospect to Calgary. It was at that point our source broke the news to GM Williams that it wasn't a dream that he had but, a reality.
Luckily the league stepped in on the deal and launched an investigation due to it appearing quite lopsided in Calgary's favor. No word on what evidence they found on this "story" but in the end the decision was made to overturn the deal. Since then, GM Williams has had a lot of other offers come in for the pick but so far nothing has materialized. It seems GM Williams will hold onto the pick a bit longer, if it will even be moved at all is anyone's guess. Washington's poor play as of late has only increased the value on the pick.
We did try to reach Gm McAndrews for comment but he declined. The story seems like it could be true as it does come from a reputable source, however; we cannot confirm this 100% at the time of printing. Food for thought.
