The San Jose Sharks are on a magical run right now. They’ve gone 16-1 in their last 17 games including a 10-game win streak that they’re currently riding. They’re the hottest team in the PFHL, RED HOT! What’s the secret to their success? We interviewed 4 of the key players for this team and their GM. Starting with team captain Connor McDavid who boasts 16 goals and 14 assists during these 17 games.
“Great teamwork, everyone is pulling their weight right now. We’ve got depth up and down the lineup, if our top 6 doesn’t score our bottom 6 will chip in. Willsy brought in Pietro who’s really helped lock things down on our back end.” – Connor McDavid.
McDavid isn’t wrong, since the Pietrangelo and Perron trades the Sharks have gone 13-1. Their depth is stronger than ever. Which is evident with Timo Meiers 9 goals and 8 assists during this 16-1 stretch, while playing most of his time on the 3rd line.
“I’ve found a great spot in the lineup with Perron and Jenner. We play hard and have really found some chemistry. One guy who isn’t getting enough credit is Ned. He struggled early this year but has been an absolute beast for us lately.” – Timo Meier.
Speaking of Ned, he’s playing the best stretch of hockey in his PFHL career. Going 11-1 with a .932 SV % and 2.16 GAA, incredible stats for a high scoring league like the PFHL.
“I’ve been in the zone, it all starts with the guys in front of me though. They’ve all played great defensively and made it easy on myself for the most part. Adding someone like Alex Pietrangelo has made a huge difference for us.” – Alex Nedeljkovic.
Since joining the squad Pietrangelo has gotten 2 goals and 14 assists in the 13 games he’s played in teal, no longer in the shadow of Erik Karlsson, he can finally take front and centre stage on the Sharks defence.
“It’s nice being the go-to guy on defence here, no disrespect to Klefbom or the other guys but I feel like I can really take the reins myself here and drive play. It’s easy with a loaded team like this.” – Alex Pietrangelo.
And they are loaded, need proof? In the past 17 games they’ve averaged 4.29 goals per game and only 2.23 goals against per game (73 GF 38 GA), and their special teams are clicking with the Powerplay at 29.5% (26 for 88) and the Penalty Kill at 86.7% (72/83). One question everyone has is, are they peaking too early?
“I wouldn’t say so, I’d say we’re finally playing to our potential. We had a hole in our lineup on defence that we addressed and now that it’s fixed this team is finally rolling like we had initially planned. We’re obviously due to lose a few here and there but I fully expect this team to continue to play well for the remainder of the regular season and well into the playoffs.” – GM Matthew Rensby-Wills.
What do you think? Is it a flash in the pan or are the San Jose Sharks the real deal? Will this article completely jinx them and cause them to fall out of a playoff spot completely?! Let us know in the comment section below. Cheers!
