Welcome to the seventh edition of Wild Times
Halfway mark of the 2022-2023 season, the Wild find themselves dead last in the overall standings. "We were hoping the start of the year was just an unusual slump, but the losses kept piling on. I am ready to admit and take full responsibility for our struggles. This year has been unprecedented, we felt as a collective brain trust last off-season that we positioned our team to compete for a playoff spot. But no matter what we tried we just can't get the chemistry to work this year. So our focus is going to change for the rest of the 2022-2023 season and reshift our efforts to quickly re-tool and focus on 2023-2024" Wolf said in his opening statement.
You heard it folks, the Wild will not be going into a rebuild. Management believes they have enough of a core signed to team friendly deals, a core that they can still build around and hope for better fates moving forward. A plan that was evident when earlier today the Minnesota Wild announced the re-signing of star defenseman Roman Josi. Josi signed to a 1-year-deal @ $5,500,000. Saving a total discount of $3,500,000 from Josi's previous salary, that is $3,500,000 in cap savings the Wild are already looking towards for next year.
"We have a good idea of the core pieces we want to keep here, we will continue to build around players like MacKinnon, Kopitar, Josi, Oettinger, and Seider moving forward, but that's not to say that we won't be active in potentially shedding some cap in other areas of the team and bringing in new personnel. We'll use this season and upcoming trade deadline to bring in a bit younger reinforcements, bring in more cash and shed some cap.
Our current roster make-up is obviously not transitioning into on ice success this year, so there will be changes to the team and our goal is to change the genetic make-up and hopefully that will begin to spark success moving forward." Wolf continued, "This current roster just isn't working." Wolf admitted as he concluded his short press conference.
The Wild have been overly confident before yet have fallen flat on their faces, however they do have the right core pieces on the team for a quick turnaround to be possible, the only question is, can Wolf execute the plan to work or will team ownership be signing this GMs termination papers sooner rather than later?
