30 game recap Detroit Red Wings
So the 30-game mark has passed and we are going to look at some numbers for the Detroit Red Wings;
1-10: a 5-4-1 record
GF: 34 (3,40 avg)
GA: 31 (3,10 avg)
SHF: 296 (29,6 avg)
SHA: 291 (29,1 avg)
PIM: 138 (13,8 avg)
Hits: 242 (24,2 avg)
FO%: 468 of 870 (53,79%)
11-20: a 7-3-0 record
GF: 41 (4,10 avg)
GA: 33 (3,30 avg)
SHF: 348 (34,8 avg)
SHA: 333 (33,3 avg)
PIM: 116 (11,6 avg)
Hits: 240 (24,0 avg)
FO%: 488 of 947 (51,53%)
21–30: a 6-3-1 record
GF: 40 (4,0 avg)
GA: 27 (2,70 avg)
SHF: 373 (37,3 avg)
SHA: 282 (28,2 avg)
PIM: 124 (12,4 avg)
Hits: 212 (21,2 avg)
FO%: 442 of 929 (47,58%)
After 30 games Red Wings have an 18-10-2 record, sitting comfortably in the wildcard spot with 8 points down to Toronto Maple Leafs, after a somewhat shaky start of the season the Red Wings seem to have found stability in their play as of late, why is that? Well before we take a closer look at that let us have a look at the special team's sofar.
PP 1-10; 50 PPO, 11 goals (22,00%)
PP 11-20; 50 PPO, 6 goals (12,00%)
PP 21-30; 51 PPO, 15 goals (29,41%)
PK 1-10; PKA 57, Succesful PK 47 (82,46%)
PK 11-20; PKA 64, Succesful PK 48 (75,00%)
PK 21-30; PKA 53, Succesful PK 43 (81,13%)
From these numbers, we can see the main problem for the team so far, it’s not so much the percentages then it is the opportunities, 174 PKs in 30 games is a lot and it is something that the Wings have been having trouble with all season, taking a lot of penalties! 39 goals against out of 91 (not counting shootout goals, empty net etc) means that nearly 43% of the teams total GA comes from the PK, which in a way is a compliment for the teams 5v5 defensive play, meaning that if the Wings had a top PK in the league the goals against would be even lower.
Any major changes done to the team during the first 30 games of the season? No not really, other then some line moves, Michael Rasmussen who had a real good preseason playing on the first line with Draisaitl and Connor, the success from the preseason sadly didn’t carry over to the regular season and Rasmussen was moved to the 3rd line unit, and also the successful 2nd line Nelson-Brown-Lee was moved up to the 1st line spot while Draisaitl-Connor-Kiviranta moved to the 2nd line, another change is that Carl Hagelin now finds himself as the extra forward, and Rudolf Balcers has since a good while back been on the 4th line and on PK duty instead of Hagelin. But the biggest change is among the goalies, the first clear number one, Semyon Varlamov has lost his spot to Casey Desmith, who know is the number one in Detroit, and he has taken the position with posting a league leading SvPCT, lowest GAA in the league, 4 assists and 2 shotouts, now who would have expected that when the season came around?
