Ducks Quarterly Press-Conference: Learning to Fly Through Adversity
It is 21 games into the season and the Anaheim Ducks are facing tumultuous times that could make or break the season. Two of their young studs, Daniel Sprong and Max Comtois, are out of the lineup going into Sunday’s matchup against the 2nd in the Pacific Division Seattle Kraken. To make matters worse, Mark Stone has been snake bit and is dealing with a cold streak. GM Felts sat down with the reporters from Ducks Digest to answer a few burning questions.
Do you have an update on Sprong?
He will be another week, at least. We will be glad to have him back in the lineup.
How valuable is he to your lineup?
Well, he is our leading scorer. Coach (Jeff Blashill) has been trusting him more and more in key situations. He has a bright future here in Anaheim and we will hopefully have an extension signed soon.
Can you tell us your thoughts on the Max Comtois suspension?
The league made their decision. I disagree.
Even though he instigated a fight against Dante Fabbro, less then a minute into the game?
Look, hockey players have long memories. Fabbro knew it was coming, he just didn’t expect it from Max. Our guy gets a game because he won a fight.
Mark Stone seems to be off his usual scoring pace, is that going be a problem for your playoff chances?
It’d be great if he found the back of the net like last year, but I am not worried about Stone. Even if he isn’t sniping them, he is so dominant defensively that he makes up for it. We’ve had to juggle things a bit with Sprong and Comtois out, so maybe Coach will find new chemistry and Stone will snap his slump. We are in the race, everybody needs to step it up. The goal is to make the playoffs.
Stone is a free agent at the end of this season, do you have plans to re-sign him?
We are working on it. Nothing is set yet.
The Ducks have 23 points sit 6th in the Pacific Division and 1 point out of the last Wild Card spot. However, they have 2 games in hand on the San Jose Sharks who are sitting at 24. Tonight, the Sharks are facing the Vancouver Canucks who also have 24 points on the season. The Ducks could potentially leapfrog over either team with a win tonight and find themselves back in playoff position.
At the morning skate, Mark Stone was taking rushes with new linemates Jean Gabriel-Pageau and Brady Tkachuk. Stone was wingmen with Tkachuk the majority of last season, when he tore up the league for 54 goals and 58 assists. This changeup might be the spark that returns Stone to form.
Brady Tkachuk’s presence on the ice is being noticed by fans, and insiders have reported his teammates consider him the heartbeat of the team. His wingman this year, Sprong, leads the team in scoring, as did his linemate Stone last season. Seems to be wherever Tkachuk goes, good things follow.
