After a very quiet offseason in Boston, where virtually no free agents were added, expecting amongst some hockey pundits were low. The Bruins have been in the mix all season long. This is even more unexpected given the powerhouse that the Atlantic has been, with 5 teams in the tip 12 of the PFHL and two more just 1 and 3 points behind Toronto.
While the PFHL Pro Bruins are in the midst the playoff mix, this article will focus on the same thing GM Davidson has done, the PROVIDENCE BRUINS.
The P-Bruins were vastly ignored last year in what really was a lost year, when Davidson held onto his playoff dreams for far too long for the Pro club. He went into this season with a completely different focus. He wanted to allow the Pro to see what it could do with little help and really let the kids get in the mix on the farm.
"Free agency" for the Bruins took place during the waiver period.
Alex Barbanov, Matt Murray, Ben Hutton, Kevin Rooney, Milan Lucic and Logan Thompson were all added by waivers. Alex Barre-Boulet was also added in a trade following being picked up by Colorado on waivers as well. Those 4 forwards have all made up the bottom 6 of the Pro team allowing guys like Pat Maroon and Chris Wagner to use their toughness and lead by example on the farm for the kids.
Matt Murray and Logan Thompson have changes the face of the farm. Last year had basically a pylon in net in Providence, but after both squeaked thru waivers, make up one of the best farm tandems and Murray leads the farm in every goalie category that counts.
Marco Scandella was brought in early in the offseason for depth on defence but after landing Hutton on waivers, allowed the Bruins to move Scandella and Michael Stone to the farm strengthening BOTH teams.
The veterans have been a difference to the farm development. Scandella is tied for 3rd in league in pp goals, and has 87 hits good for 4th in the league and 7th in ice time. Kampfer has 15 points as well from the blueline and Stone has 12.
For a good chunk of the season Maroon and Wagner would patrol a wing on each of the top two lines allowing PInto and Byfield to be protected out there, but now that they have feet wet, are now together.
Drafted rookies, Laurent Dauphin and Stefan Noesen as older rookies have been great. Dauphin has 5 goals and 8 assists, while Noesen leads the teams with 12 goals adding 6 assists and 42 hits.
Quinton Byfield is having a fantastic Rookie season. 10 goals, 13 assists and leads the team at +14.
As great a season as Byfield has had, Shane PInto has been even better! Shane leads the team with 28 points in 21 games and will start scoring even more goals if his shooting percentage rises from 4.55%.
Beyond these guys, holds a developing future Norris candidates. Urho Vaakanainen is among the top of the leagues defenceman as just a second year guy. Urho has 6 goals, 21 assists, 4th in scoring by defenseman. +9 rating, among league leaders in shot blocks, and 10th in ice time, just 1 minute less than Scandella.
Given that Davidson had such a quiet offseason last year with little farm development, just imagine what the offseason holds with so many players progressing to being full time pros next year. The focus is on the right spot and the future is bright in Boston!
