GM Sean McAndrews made big news late last night completing a deal that saw Vincent Trocheck added to the squad in exchange for Sean Monahan. The deal is sure to be a controversial one. Long time Calgary sports reporter in the Calgary market, Eric Francis, sat down with the GM of the Flames to get a feel for why this move was made.
Eric: First of all, thank you for sitting down with me today Mr. McAndrews. I know you are a busy man.
Sean: Thanks Eric. I've never been a fan of yours but our Public Relationships team made me do it. I'm just here so I don't get fined.
Eric: Ummmm ok. So let's start with why you made this deal.
Sean: Same reason I make every deal, because I think it makes our franchise better. What kind of a question is that?
Eric: Okaaaaaaay, how about what do you think Vincent brings to your team that Sean did not as the two centres are pretty similar players on paper?
Sean: Ok that's a better question. You are still sitting on one strike. First of all, Sean is a fantastic player and this move by no means reflects poorly on him. We've been looking for a player like Trocheck for quite a while and to get quality you have to give quality. Sean has been a fantastic servant to our team, we had a good chat about the move, and are still on great terms.
As for what we like about Vincent is his elite skill level coupled with strong two way play and a bit of edge he can bring. That's a very rare skillset. His defensive acumen and two way play is something we really were seeking and he hits like a ton of bricks despite being a smaller guy. We think with him and Lindy (Lindholm) down the middle we are going to have a centre duo that is going to create nightmares for teams at both ends of the ice.
Eric: How do you think the fans will react considering Monahan was leading your team with 14 points while Trocheck has struggled with Ottawa only racking up 5 points?
Sean: I really respect the fans but as soon as a GM starts listening to the fans he also needs to start packing his bags and look for a new job. I respect the fans but I have to make the best decision for my team and my franchise. With that said, I knew this might not be a popular move on the surface as our team is playing well after getting off to a slow start and Sean was a big part of that. However, chemistry is a strange thing and we really think Vincent needed a fresh start. Rumor has it Tyler Seguin slept with Vincent's wife and spread some compromising pictures of the act around the dressing room in Ottawa. That would make it tough for any player to succeed. We think he is going to fit in really well and believe he will be able to replace Sean's production. We also hope this removes some of the defensive burden for Lindholm at centre and allows him to kickstart the offense a bit.
Eric: Holy fuck, did you just say Seguin fucked Trocheck's wife, took pictures of it, and gave them out to his team mates?
Sean: Watch your mouth! And yes. Strike two you foul mouthed son of a whore.
Eric: I'm sorry about that. Very unprofessional of me. Next question, what are the lines going to look like with Trocheck in the line-up, can we expect big changes?
Sean: We are going to see how things look in practice but at first you can expect him to slot right in for Monahan between Kane and Nylander to start. We will see how things look and could shuffle the deck a bit but will see how things go. We like the idea of Kane and Trocheck together as they are both physical and have a well rounded offensive skillset. However, our second line has been good but not great so we could mix things up a bit after seeing how things start.
Eric: Ok thanks for meeting with me today. I think that's all I need.
Sean: Good, I think I've seen about enough of you today. I actually I think I've seen enough of you for the next six months.
Eric: Good point, I think this is the first time I haven't got 3 strikes with you in a long while.
Eric: First of all, thank you for sitting down with me today Mr. McAndrews. I know you are a busy man.
