Another preseason has been cleaned off and a new regular season is about to start, we are here today to look at the Red Wings preseason.
Starting off rather slow, with a 2-3-0 record in their five first games and a herendous 11-20 goal difference. Many were the fans that blamed this on the suprise move of starcenter John Tavares and Ryan Johansen in the off season!
Looking closer on these games we see that "taking it easy" during a preseason was clearly not the case for Detroit, collecting 62 PIM's during the first 5 games thats an avarage of 12 PIM per game, that gives the opposing team a major uppehand which may be a reflection of the games being played, when you don't spend time on the ice it's hard to win games. Especially when it's your defensive core that takes most of the penalties which were the case for Detroit. The coacing staff had their beloved crash line with Rasmussen - Motte - Lammikko, but that crash line was only complete til after the fifth game as after that were spilt, seeing youngster Michael Rasmussen suprisingly taking a spot on the teams first line along side with Draisaitl and Connor as the staff needed to try something different.
For the next five games saw a shift, at least a small one the record 4-1-0 speaks for it self, still not anything especially impressive anywhere, 16-16 goal difference, still taking alog of PIM's 65 of them over 5 games. But the main difference were within the team, Carl Hagelin, and Lars Eller among a few other changes saw more icetime during PK. Which certainly seems to have helped, still things needed some tweaking and they players started to find their new formations better and better!
The last four games of the preseason resultet in a 4-0-0 record for the Red Wings, with a 24-10 goal difference, and only 28 PIM's which is well below the avarage the team were used to from the games before this, so all in all the 14 preseason games resultet in a 10-4-0 record, a +5 goal difference (51-46), 458 shots on goal for against 434 shots against, 155 PIM's which is still incredably high (nearly 12 PIM per game) and with a 78,87% PK allowing 15 goals, that is very hurtful for any team, but with on the other hand the PP units delivered a nice 35,59% efficiency over 14 games, 21 goals in 59 tryes.
On another not, Detroit delivered 332 hits (Rasmussen 50, Clifton 44, Jones 28), while only recording a Hits Takes record of 290 (Draisaitl 39, Nelson 34, Jones/Morrissey 24) which proves that Detroit is playing the physical kind of hockey GM Lundgren is looking for, out-hitting their opponents, also faceoffs has been a good area, winning 633 out of 1243 takes giving the team a 50,93% FO rating (could be better of course, and would probably have been would Tavares and Johansen still been on the team), but all in all there is green numbers all across the board.
Of course this should lift over to the regular season right? Well that is something we just have to wait and see as pre season, regular season and post season, can be totally different things and has been proven before to have nothing to do with eachother at all!
