Habs have Quiet Off-Season
Montreal GM Todd Snider promised there would be changeover at end of last season but assured the fan base that he would not move the nucleus of the team. That nucleus included Mark Scheifele and Nick Suzuki down the middle along with wingers Matthew Tzachuk, surprising 20 goal scorer Evgeny Svechnikov and Calder Finalist Cole Caulfield. On the back end Devon Toews, Kris Letang, Ryan Graves and Josh Manson were retained to protect the defensive zone in front of all-star goaltender Carey Price. After all the Habs were one of the best teams down the stretch for the last 20 games and are looking on carrying that forward into the new year.
So what did Gm Snider do? Well first he took the approach not to get in a bidding war for any free agents that were available. He viewed the list overall weak and chose to retool part of his roster via the trade root. Choosing to save his dollars to spend later, maybe at the deadline.
Montreal let go C- M.Highmore, W-N.Gusev, W- R.Reaves, D- T.Myers and G-M.Jones upgrading them with C- Phillip Danault, W-Ryan Hartman, C/W- Jacob De La Rose, D- Zach Bogosian and rookie G- Dan Vladar for the price of T.Myers, S.Holmstrom a 2nd, 4th and 5th pick. Another add will be highly rated rookie Lucas Raymond who is projected to make the squad out of training camp.
GM Snider is still looking to add one more defenceman and a 4th line winger/center but admits he is not willing to give up high draft picks or top prospects to land one and is willing to wait to see what lands on the waiver wire at the start of the season.
Montreal made 6 draft picks to add to their prospect pool in off season adding W- Cutter Gauthier, C-Owen Beck, W- Reiger Lorenz, W- Alexander Perevalov, D-Michael Fisher and G- Ivan Zhigalov who join top Habs prospects Joshua Roy, Riley Kidney and William Dufour to name a few.
The lines seem to project out to start the season as follows:
RW- Raymond, C- Scheifele, LW- Svechnikov
RW- Caufield , C-Suzuki, LW-Tkachuk
RW-Kunin, C-Danault, LW- Hartman
RW- Chaisson/Allison, C- De La Rose, LW-M.Jones
D1- Graves, Letang
D2- Toews, Manson
D3-Petterson, Bogosian
G- Price & Vladar
Overall Montreal management is looking forward to upcoming season and hope to challenge for a playoff spot in the East!
The future looks bright !
