Columbus Blue Jackets – Season 2 – Part 1
Crossroads
After getting into the second round of the playoffs in the inaugural PFHL season, the Blue Jackets management were at a bit of a crossroads. Do we try and compete or go for a rebuild? The solution to both of these questions isn't always that clear, many different factors have to play themselves out before management can decide
Entering the off season we addressed the need at centre by trading Marchand for Toews and made a deal to bring in Olli Maata to shore up the back-end. We had one graduate to the NHL from Cleveland in Noah Gregor who should be able to play on any line. These moves should have a net positive going into the next season. Leading up to the draft an opportunity presented itself to better the team for the future and totally tossed a spanner into the off season choices that have been made so far. CBJ never had a good farm and no one was eligible for an NHL re-rate and the few players that had high potential are still in the AHL for another year.
Chicago feels they have the wheels to go far this year, and with the three top scorers of last year on their team how could you not think that. We negotiated a deal that sent Rickard Rackell to the hawks for Dominik Kubalik, Vasily Podkolzin, 1st Rd Pick 2022. After looking at the rosters of the other teams in the league and seeing an influx of NHL re-rates of players playing 20 games and becoming top 4 players on cheap deals, this is an avenue we need to explore.
The draft was a cool experience, its always nice to get pics in the earlier rounds. After getting back into the first round we selected Issac Howard @ Pick 16. Dobber has this to say “A gifted offensive winger with great puck skills and a quick release. Needs to get stronger but has top-six upside at the NHL level.” Howard played most recent for the USA U-18 development team and led with 32p in 27gp. The rest of the picks were in the later rounds an most have awesome names.
Free Agency was interesting, tons of money got spread around to the small crop of players that were available this year. We addressed a need at forward with Chris Tierney and feel we got good value in smooth skater Erik Gustafsson.
New GM Philly came with another trade offer that we feel we couldn't pass up. We sent Jordan Binnington for Linus Ullmark, Logan Stankoven. This trade will decide the fate of the 2023 Blue Jackets, Will the goalies with low endurance hold out? Who knows. Stankoven is primed to be a top player in the league after scoring 104pts in Kamloops and 10pts for Canada's gold winning team at the past juniors. We are finally filling the cupboard!
