It has been a quiet offseason in Toronto. After reaching the finals and laying an egg there has been a lot of soul searching, looks in the mirror and gut checks about who is serious about trying to win the cup. Management has basically rolled back the same roster as a season ago with the only change of significance but the movement of Alex Edler out and Kyle Palmieri in. There is a real thought that this team is cursed after the '67 cup the team was the closest they have been in 55 years. It hit management and the players hardWhen asked about the off-season at a charity golf event this summer Gibbons’ had this to say:
“We put it all on the line this past year, the playoffs are hard and coming out of any conference is a real accomplishment but we fell short of our ultimate goal. Its been a painful few weeks and even now I feel sick to my stomach. The way things fell apart for us in the final was gut wrenching and our entire team has had to take some time. Only in the past week have we been really moving forward and focusing on next season. I like our group and think we have a good shot again next year. We are pretty much rolling the same thing back with a bit more maturity and experience and I hope it bodes well for us.”
Clearly still frustrated about the lose Gibbons’ snap hooked his next shot out onto highway 11 into oncoming traffic. Early skates have started and nearly everyone is already in Toronto skating two a days and looking highly competitive. Rumors Phil Kessel has cut the hot dog out of his summer routine in an effort to lose his baby face in his mid 30’s
Lines have been shifted a bit over the summer to create a little more balance:
Ehlers Pettersson Mangianpane
Niederreiter Backstrom Strome
Bunting Kerfoot Kessel
Engvall Compher Palmieri
Rielly Pesce
Zub Bean
Menell Liljegren
Markstrom
Quick
Toronto fans have a lot to be excited for especially when you consider that future NHL re-rate players like Wyatt Johnston, Marco Rossi and Matt Coronato and progressing nicely in the leagues beyond the PFHL, there is still belief in this core and this management team Only time will tell
