Now that the 2022 PFHL Draft is in the books, it's time to review our new Blues prospects !
1st Overall 2022
Shane Wright (C): The St-Louis Blues began the 2022 PFHL Draft with Kingston Frontenacs Center, the former unanimous 1st overall. The young man joined the OHL in 2019 with a granted exceptional status. He is the 6th player to have the exceptional status (John Tavares, Aaron Ekblad, Connor McDavid, Sean Day and Joe Veleno). Behind the scene we heard rumours that the Blues were considering drafting Cooley 1st overall. Shane Wright is a complete player with outstanding vision. He was the most complete player in the 2022 PFHL Draft. He is NHL ready and he could join the Blues next season. It's hard to compare prospects to PFHL players but if I had to pick a player to compare Wright it would have to be Patrice Bergeron our former Captain. He also remind us in some ways John Tavares.
Draft Grade: A-
22 Overall 2022
Liam Ohgren (LW): Picking Ohgren at 22 was a no brainer. The Swedish player was playing in Sweden with the Djurgardens Jr. GM Poulin told us that he was a top 10 player on their board. Ohgren will have to develop and round up his game but he could become a top 6 winger at the PFHL level. His game is complete, he like to create plays with passes and has a underated shot. He can sometime hold on to the puck a bit much but it something that the coaching staff will have to work on. He was rated 18th overall with the concensus ranking. A line with Liam Ohgren and Shane Wright would be a dream. He is very mature for his age. He was the captain of the Swedish U-20 Hockey Team
Draft Grade: A+
43 Overall 2022
Tristan Luneau (D): With the 2 first round picks being forwards, GM Poulin went with Tristan Luneau a defenseman from the LHJMQ. Luneau plays with the Gatineau Olympiques. He had a knee surgery last offseason. The french canadian is the safest D man in the PFHL 2022 Draft. His ceiling is probably a top 4 D but his floor is probably the same. He will also have an impact on the PK. He is very responsible in all the three zones. He is the former LHJMQ Rookie Award winner and will enjoy at least 2 seasons in the LHJMQ before joining the AHL or PFHL. It's not a sexy pick but it's a safe pick.
Draft Grade: B-
138 Overall 2022:
Cedrick Guindon (LW): Without a 3th and 4th round pick, St-Louis selected forward Cedrick Guindon from the Owen Sound Attack. Cedrick is a intelligent forward with a one of the best shot in the PFHL Draft. He plays a solid two-way game but will need to add size and strength to reach his NHL potential. Cedrick (5ft10 170 lbs) skates well and he brings great support in the defensive zone. The Owen Sound Attack was kinda weak last season but Guindon was a standout. His potential is great for a 5th round pick. Another 2 way player for the Blues.
Draft Grade: C+
163 Overall 2022:
Charlie Leddy (D): In every draft, there will be those defensive-first defensemen who get selected in the later rounds, takes a few years to develop, then explode into the league once they make it. In 2022, one such candidate to be this player is Charles Leddy. The young defenseman is a true shutdown defenseman and lacks the offensive upsides that most of the top end guys have. He has the potential to grow into a reliable third pairing defender at the NHL level with proper development. If he does, he could be one of the best pick in the 2022 PFHL Draft.
Draft Grade: C+
Overall Draft Grade 2022: B
On paper it looks like our draft was pretty good. No WOW moments but safe picks all the way down !
