From the podium tonight Leafs President Brendan Shanahan announced with immediate effect the termination of Kyle Dubas' contract. It seems after announcing that all staff and players were 100% vaccinated Dubas was putting off getting the poke, which affected the Shanaplan... and nothing affects the the Shanaplan. He spoke highly of his young former GM but made no bones about it, Leadership of this organization has to put the team ahead of themselves. Shanahan is a surprise move went a bit more off the board he did even last time announcing new GM Vince Gibbons. When asked what he thought the middle aged Father of three could bring he had this to say,
"Kids sports is just starting up in Alberta and with three kids that guy is going to be stuck in a lot of gyms, soccer fields, and cold ass rinks. These locations have cell service and Gibbons' never puts his phone down. I have watched him rebuild teams in several leagues and although he hasn't put together a championship season as of yet he has put together some great rosters. I like his asset evaluation and his ability to make the hard choices. He has been involved in SIM leagues from nearly every league you can think of. GM of the Calgary Hitmen (WHL), Rimuoski Oceanic (QMJHL), Edmonton Oiler (NHL rerate league), and Colorado Avalanche (Whatever the F$%^ that league was) and has consistently been at the top of those leagues. We know he brings a data team with him and has a level of nerd spreadsheet we don't even understand but thats why it was an easy decision to make."
We will see how the GM manages the media in a City like Toronto but early on he set the tone, taking Steven Simmons press credentials and getting security to escort him out of the Scotiabank Arena. Fans were immediately chanting "Gibbons for life" as he sulked out of the arena eating one last hotdog before walking to the GO train to get himself out of town.
Gibbons' seemed pleased to be picking 7th this time around and was asked if he had a preference on where to pick.
"It doesn't really matter where you pick. You adjust the strategy a bit to how the draft unfolds. At 7 you are making the draft unfold for 25 other teams so we need to be prepared and make sure we get a franchise cornerstone that those teams wish they had. After that a good team is made up of all sorts of guys and we need that sort of balance."
Excited to be a part of things, cant wait to get rolling.
