The Washington Capitals offseason is set to be one of rebuilding as GM Williams has stated that he wants the team molded a certain way to suit his style. GM Williams also stated that nobody on the roster was safe so it will be interesting to see what moves are made and what players remain on the roster after the dust settles.
Currently the team seems to boast a great deal of young talent such as Hischier, Debrincat and Puljujarvi as far as fowards go. The average age among the forward corps is only 25 so that leaves plenty of time for this team to grow and develop together to certainly become a contender in a few years. The Caps also have a couple exciting prospects in the system such as Seth Jarvis and Fabian Lysell. They are expected to make the Bears squad this upcoming season and promise to be future cornerstones of the franchise.
On Defense, the Caps are expected to bring up some of their young guns from the Bears to play pro this season. Players like Ian Mitchell, Rasmus Sandin and Cal Foote are all expected to challenge for spots on the big club. It shold be interesting as the Caps really only have 4 guaranteed pro defensemen to go next season in Kulikov, Sanheim, Bouchard and Cole so anything can happen.
In Goal, the Capitals brought in veteran Freddy Andersen at the deadline this season and he looks to tandem the starting job with budding goaltender Vitek Vanecek who showed some signs of greatness this past season. In the pipeline, the goalie prospects seem pretty thin with Nick Schneider set to anchor the Bears for the next couple seasons.
The Capitals do not currently have a 1st round pick this year as it was moved out to get rid of the PK Subban contract shortly after GM Williams arrived at the helm. The Caps could make some deals tho to secure some picks so keep your eyes on the trade board.
With the direction of the team set on a mini rebuild, it seems the goal is for the Caps to be in the running for the Connor Bedard sweepstakes next year. One thing is for sure, this team is loaded with young talent and will be an exciting team to watch grow and develop in the coming seasons.
