The San Jose Sharks made some massive trades this season in hopes of landing themselves a PFHL title but ultimately fell short to the eventual PFHL Champs, divisional rivals, the LA Kings. We interviewed Sharks GM Matthew Wills to get some insight on how he felt his team performed and how the players felt.
How did the organization feel this season and the post season went?
"Disappointing. Everyone from the top to the bottom of this org thought we had a legit cup run in us this year. We wish things had ended differently but we were utterly outclassed by the LA Kings. And credit to them, that is one top notch organization."
Where do you feel it went wrong?
"That second round series was closer than it looked. Our team defence wasn't up to par, the media wanted to blame Ned but we didn't help him out at all."
Will you be addressing goaltending this off season?
"We're still in the process of evaluating our entire team. Ned is still young and learning and Elliot is a legend, we like what we have but everything and everyone is still being evaluated."
Everyone? Even Connor McDavid?
"McDavid is the heartbeat of this team and he had a phenomenal season and solid playoffs. IF I were to trade him, the return would need to be massive and would need to make this team better now and for the future. I just don't see anyone offering us what we'd want."
It's rumoured that Marleau is going to retire, can you confirm this?
"I'll let Patrick decide and announce that on his own, he did a great job mentoring our young players and he's welcome back to return next season."
Fair enough, can you give us some insight on what this off season may bring?
"Don't be surprised if this same core comes back for another crack at it. We have the depth, youth, and talent. But we may have to move one big piece to make the team even better, we'll see what happens."
