(As Metallica's Blackend rips for 2 minutes and 13 seconds then fades out) Hello all you cardiac kids, welcome to another weekend edition of Into The Eye Of The Storm where we will duh duh dun duh duh rock you like a hurricane! I'm your host, Bender Hover. So Team President and GM Wes Mucyk has brought in (do not look into our financials) some very interesting members to his office team. His personal assistant Kate Beckinsale. Dougie Gilmour as his assistant GM, and 1 of my all-time fav players Pavel Bure who works with others on team skating and skills. Now, my guest here later today has just been hired on to Carolina's Strength and conditioning team. The man, the myth, the legend. This guy once was bitten by a rattlesnake.....then after 3 days of suffering the rattlesnake died! Yes, Chuck Norris will be my guest here shortly to discuss his new role with the team.
Before we get to that, let's start things a rollin' as we will take a look at some of our Canes top prospects. In no particular order. Simply through the eyes of an unbiased hockey fan who knows all Carolina prospects will be heart trophy winners. FYI guy's, we will not be talking about either LWer Alexis Lafreniere or Center Dylan (the workhorse from Whitehorse) Cozens as we feel that this market has talked about them so much this past year as prospects. Starting with the backend, our Dmen, goaltenders and finishing up with our guys down the middle and those flanking on the wings.
First up let's take a look at our top prospect, only 19 years of age, Dman Simon Edvinsson who the Hurricanes selected in the 7th round of the PFHL dispersal draft, 217th overal. Standing 6'5, weighing 207 lbs. this kid from Sweden has the potential to be a top pair guy. The Hurricanes hope he becomes their franchise Dman. We expect to see him with either the Chicago Wolves or Carolina Hurricanes in 2023-2024 as he appears to be staying in the SHL for 1 more season. Edvinsson already has a solid, well rounded game. He skates really well, smoothly around the ice and has incredible puck handling. His decision making and reading of the play are top notch. Caniacs, this is a guy we are very excited about.
Nobody on our current pro roster is expected to stick around here for more than 2 or 3 seasons. Down on the farm though we have 20 yr old Braden Schneider who just finished his 1st professional season with the Chicago Wolves. The plan around this kid is 1 more season down on the farm, then hopes are that he will start the season with the Carolina team for 2023-2024. A right shot Dman @d 6'2, 209 lbs, this kid can throw some thunderous hits, yet is very disciplined being able to stay out of the box. A mobile two-way defenceman. Makes crisp passes and has solid positioning. He will someday soon be filling a top 4 spot on our backend.
Scott Morrow is a right shot Dman, only 19 years old, standing 6'2. His offensive game is outstanding, as this kid is a magician with the puck, that, his size paired along with elite level skating, edgework and agility also make it challenging for attackers. Scott is able to dictate the pace of a game. This kid has the potential to be something special, or we think at the worst, a top 4 guy.
This last Dman has many buzzing about him. Fans, me, and opponents. He may not bring the offense like those last 3, but his defensive shutdown, blow up opponents with massive bone jarring hits has Alexander (THE BOOM!!) Nikishin as a future youtube hits compilation sensation. 6'4, 216 lbs, with great defensive instincts. He has shown the ability to handle the puck, with a rocket of a shot when he steps into one. A PK specialist who has the potential to be a top 4 guy.
Goaltending, a clear weakness of the organization. With potential hall of famer Parker Milner nearing the end of his career and nothing else currently playing pro hockey. Selecting, and developing guys at this position is a crapshoot, a roll of the dice. Maybe there is someone down the pipeline who currently looks like a longshot, but 3 or 4 years from now emerges as a pro PFHL goaltender.
There is 1 guy our Hurricanes have developing nicely. Russian Pyotr Kochetkov who just turned 23, and has some size to him at 6'3. He is aggressive, very athletic, with very good positioning. We expect to see him playing with the Wolves next season. He has the potential to be a solid PFHL backup, or a ceiling that could be that of a decent 1b in a tandem.
Dylan Guenther (19 years old) could arguably be our top prospect, well, of those not playing pro hockey (Lafreniere/Cozens). Able to play either wing, Guenther is a right handed shot, and that shot is deadly. The puck explodes off his stick with his elite level release. He's got great hockey instincts and a knack for finding open spots.
Samuel Poulin shoots left and can flank his centerman on both sides of the ice. He possesses a solid two-way game, but is known to be pretty creative on the offensive side. His work ethic and leadership skill are top notch. Poulin has the potential to be a top six forward in the PFHL.
Jack Drury is the smallest prospect on this list at 6', with everyone else being 6'2 or bigger, but the kid's motor is always going top gear, a high energy guy who plays a very strong defensive game. There is offensive upside to his game as well. He has the potential to be a middle line player, with strong PK skills.
Patrik Puistola is a sniper who is comfortable playing on either wing. He is capable of driving play with a real talent for finding the back of the net. His puckhandleing ability is tremendous, like he's got it on a string. He could be a boom or bust depending on how his skating develops.
Well, time for a commercial break.
