The Buffalo Sabres fell short in their inaugural PFHL season getting sent to the golf course by division rival Toronto Maple Leafs in 6 games. It was a disappointing outcome, the top line of Stamkos, Ovechkin and DeBrusk were stifled and the Sabres Def corp was too porous to win a playoff series.
The Season overall was a success, Sabres made the playoffs which was expected. Although it came down to the wire and I had expected a better regular season. Grubauer had to be the biggest disappointment and the trade that was made sending him out of town was a great move by GM Edwards. The Ovechkin for Crosby trade on the other hand did not turn out the way it was intended to. Ovechkin was good but not great, yes he collected 43 goals but with 88 points he was barely over a point a game average and the Sabres expected more from him.
So know the offseason, the defensive corp is in good shape with good youth ready to take a bigger step and the veterans Brodie and Muzzin will still play an important role on this club. Muzzin is clear first pairing, but Brodie will have to fight for a top 4 spot. Dunn, Hague, Forsling and Whitecloud are all an important part of the Buffalo future. Demelo looks to be the odd man out in this group.
The forward group will need a little tinkering this offseason, Management feel this team is close to a solid playoff run and hope to find the right blend of youth and experience to build on last season.
The draft is next for this management group, and the draft board has been built.
