taking over in the middle of the season, Columbus was half-way through their longest winning streak of the year. The team was constructed well and had key players at all positions and the cap was structured well. I felt that there were a few contracts that I could get rid of to open up some cap space and I did that moving Bailey and Brown for cheaper players and prospects with looking to make some moves at the deadline. Unfortunately I inherited Dale Talons fax machine and nothing happened at deadline day.
The season went very well. Kucherov & Marchand both put up 100pt seasons and the secondary scoring acquired through trade seemed to help. There is some concern about the defensive pairings heading into next year and we have to find a #1 centre to play between Kuch and Marchand.
Lets talk about some of the major roster moves
- Bishop for Binnington. He was consistently inconsistent in the last half of the season for us and into the playoffs. We are hoping to see some improvement next year.
- Nick Jensen for Zuccarello worked out well for us on the 2nd line. I felt we could make this move due to Andrej Sekera having a really outstanding year.
- I traded my 1st & prospect Culemens for John Klingberg. I felt we didn't have a puck moving guy on the backend and i figured he would improve the power play. He played great for us but I feel like I overpaid here in hindsight
Cleveland had an outstanding year. The team was constructed with a mix of veterans and younger players. Looks like Connor McMicheal is going to be a good player.
Columbus is open for business heading into the draft as we look into next year.
