Las Vegas, NV - Today, Vegas Golden Knights GM Tom Jervis gave his end of the season statement and touched on why he thinks the team didn't qualify for the playoffs.
"Despite missing the playoffs, I believe this season was a minor success due to a variety of reasons. First of all, we finished the season 7th in the entire PFHL in goal differential. Typically, this would indicate great success and a team headed to the playoffs. In fact, we finished higher than 10 teams that made the playoffs in this category. Including 3 teams from our own division. It seems this was a case of bad luck or not all of the pieces operating together at the same time. The beginning of the year was marred with some chemistry issues, and it took some of our top players time to find the right line mates. Eventually, we figured something out, and moved from the basement of the Western Conference to banging on the door of the wildcard. However, that time came too late, and ultimately, we fell short. Even despite all this, we still feel great about the future of the organization. We have some really talented, young players coming through our farm system, who may even start contributing next season. This will allow us to move on from some of our more highly paid veterans and be very picky about our free agent signings.
When you finish 7th in Goals for and 6th in Goals against, it's tough to pin-point an exactly place that needs to be fixed on the Golden Knights. The Powerplay was 8th in the league and the Knights boasted the #1 Penalty Kill in the entire PFHL. 8th in shots for, 9th in Faceoff Percentage...all of the indicators were there for a better outcome. This was a big reason why you didn't see us make any trades this year...we love the core we have. We tried to make some moves but didn't find anything that made sense considering the performance of the team. The good news is that the main core is all returning next season, with what should be a younger, more dynamic supporting cast. The bad news is that the Pacific division is almost certainly the most competitive division in the league. We will have our work cut out for us if we're going to not only try to repeat those numbers, but actually get in to the playoffs next year. Thank you, now I need to get back to the tables...I mean, my office..."
